Established in 2008, IIT Bhubaneswar sets its sights on seamlessly integrating education, research, and industry engagement. Offering a diverse spectrum of programs including B.Tech., B.Sc.-B.Ed, M.Tech., M.Tech. (Blended mode), Joint M.Sc.-Ph.D, MS by Research, and Ph.D., the institute stands equipped with state-of-the-art facilities and laboratories. Presently, the Institute boasts a total of 3230 students. Among them, 1,977 are enrolled in Bachelor of Technology and Dual Degree programs, spanning Civil Engineering, Computer Science & Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Engineering Physics, Mechanical Engineering, and Metallurgical & Materials Engineering. Additionally, there are 93 B.Sc.-B.Ed. students, 210 M.Sc students, 441 M.Tech  students, 579 Ph.D. students and 11 MS-R students. In the Academic Year 2024-25, the Institute offers a range of B. There is a provision for a B.Tech. student to choose an M.Tech. Programme  within the concerned discipline after completion of 3rd year (sliding mode).  The modalities are similar to a 5-year B.Tech.-M.Tech. dual degree programme. 

Moreover, the institute promotes a borderless interdisciplinary academic environment to encourage the academic staff and students to work together through the concept of schools. Academic Structure

The credit-based curriculum for B. Tech. programme is spread over 8 semesters and includes summer internship, as well as research projects. For evaluation in a subject, the Institute follows a seven-point grading system with letter grades and the corresponding grade points per credit. The Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) is computed at the end of each semester. The CGPA obtained by a student reflects his/her performance up to and including that semester.


I. CURRICULUM AND PEDAGOGY:

Furthermore, a diverse array of elective courses empowers students to curate a bespoke academic trajectory tailored to their passions and ambitions.

Rules For Change Branch

_Starting from the Academic Session 2024-25, there is no provision to change academic branch for any of the B.Tech. programmes. However, there is a provision for a B.Tech. student to choose an M.Tech. Programme  within the concerned discipline after completion of 3rd year (sliding mode).  The modalities are similar to a 5-year B.Tech.-M.Tech. dual degree programme.

Faculty

At IIT Bhubaneswar, a dynamic faculty cohort drawn from diverse backgrounds fuels the institution's academic prowess. Presently, the faculty body comprises 213 members, including 31 Professors, 1 MGM Chair Professor, 6 Visiting Professors, 70 Associate Professors, and 105 Assistant Professors. Each faculty member brings a wealth of expertise, holding a Ph.D. from prestigious national or international institutions, with many having garnered invaluable postdoctoral research experience abroad. With a keen dedication to excellence, the faculty prioritizes delivering top-tier instruction, spearheading groundbreaking research endeavors, and driving technological advancements forward. Their endeavors have garnered acclaim, securing numerous research and consultancy projects from esteemed entities such as CSIR, DST, DBT, DRDO, ISRO, and DEIT. Furthermore, they actively contribute to scholarly discourse through prolific publications, robust participation in international conferences, workshops, and symposiums, and frequent chairing of academic sessions, both domestically and internationally.

Facilities

IIT Bhubaneswar currently operates from its permanent campus at Argul, Khurda. All classes take place in the state-of-the-art classrooms and laboratories located on campus. Moreover, students benefit from access to practical training facilities at institutions such as the Central Tool Room and Training Center, Central Institute of Plastics Engineering & Technology, and Institute of Minerals and Materials Technology. The academic campus features Wi-Fi connectivity, modern classrooms equipped with audio-visual aids, well-stocked laboratories, a comprehensive library, high-speed internet, and video conferencing facilities.

Student Life at Institute

Nestled in its sprawling green campus at Argul, adjacent to the majestic Barunei Hills, IIT Bhubaneswar offers an idyllic setting for the holistic development of its students. Here, academic excellence thrives through a comprehensive educational approach that seamlessly integrates curricular and extracurricular activities. The institute provides comfortable accommodation with essential amenities for both male and female students in its permanent campus hostels. These modern facilities include round-the-clock internet access, a fully-equipped gymnasium, inviting common rooms, and various recreational spaces. Moreover, students have access to 24-hour medical assistance, with emergency care available onsite and in nearby hospitals in Bhubaneswar city for specialized medical needs. Complementing these services is a dedicated counselling cell staffed by qualified Psychologist-Counsellors and student guides, offering invaluable support to students in their day-to-day lives. The CST includes 3 counsellors, 2 coordinators, and about 50 student guides.

The Counselling Service Team (CST) at IIT Bhubaneswar is dedicated to promoting the personal, academic, professional, and social growth of students, equipping them with skills to navigate life's challenges. The team provides a safe and confidential space for students to address their concerns and difficulties, including behavioural and clinical issues affecting their academic and personal lives. Since CST members are students themselves, they empathize with the challenges faced by newcomers. This mentorship, led by senior CST students under faculty guidance, fosters a supportive culture that strengthens interpersonal relationships among students. With 29 student guides assigned to mentor groups of 8-10 first-year students, personalized support and guidance are readily available.

Furthermore, IIT Bhubaneswar prioritizes the welfare of its female members through the Women's Welfare Council. This council is committed to creating a safe and inclusive environment that empowers women and addresses their specific needs and concerns. It organizes various initiatives and programs aimed at promoting gender equality, enhancing women's participation in academic and extracurricular activities, and providing support and guidance on issues related to health, safety, and well-being. Through its efforts, the Women's Welfare Council plays a vital role in fostering a culture of respect, equality, and empowerment within the institute community.

Financial Assistance

Scholarships / Financial Assistance Provided by the Institute:   The Institute provides Remission of Tuition Fees to eligible students, with criteria based on parental gross annual income. Students whose parental income does not exceed Rs. 5 lakh per annum are eligible. Those with parental income below one lakh per annum qualify for Full Remission of Tuition Fees, while those with incomes between one lakh and five lakhs per annum are eligible for 2/3rd Remission of Tuition Fees.

Govt. of India Scholarships (Provided by Govt. of India) : The Institute endorses various Government of India Scholarship Schemes, including the Central Sector Scholarship Scheme for "Top Class Education for Schedule Caste (SC) Students," the Central Sector Scholarship Scheme for "Top Class Education for Schedule Tribe (ST) Students," Scholarships for Students with Physical Disabilities, Post-Matric Scholarships, and the Ishan Uday Scholarship, among others.

State Scholarships (provided by different states): The Institute also supports Scholarship Schemes offered by various State Governments through their respective scholarship portals. Examples include the Kalia Scholarship (Government of Odisha), E-Medhabruti Scholarship (Government of Odisha), Mukhya Mantri Medhawi Vidyarthi Yojana Scholarship (Government of Madhya Pradesh), and MAHA-DBT Scholarship (Government of Maharashtra), among others.

 PM-Vidyalaxmi Education Loan: The Institute supports the PM-Vidyalaxmi Scheme to provide education loans to meritorious students who get admission in the top quality higher educational institutions of the nation so that financial constraints do not prevent any youth of India from pursuing quality higher education.

 

Training & Placement

The Career Development Cell (CDC) at IIT Bhubaneswar is dedicated to empowering students to explore, define, and achieve their career aspirations. It offers personalized one-on-one counselling, continuous consultations throughout the career-planning journey, and support in setting and attaining goals through various career exploration activities. The overarching goal is to equip students with lifelong skills and tools necessary for professional growth, successful job searches, and overall career fulfilment. By guiding students in shaping and managing their career paths, the CDC aims to instill the essential elements needed for becoming well-rounded and successful professionals.

In previous placement seasons, IIT Bhubaneswar has achieved remarkable success. In the 2021-22 season, 94.77% of B.Tech students secured placements in top organizations and Multi-National Companies (MNCs).In the 2022-23 placements, approximately 93.91% of B.Tech students received offers from reputable organizations. Similarly, in the 2023-24 placements, approximately 86.07% of B.Tech students received offers from reputable organizations

Despite challenges faced during the 2024-25 placement season, the CDC remains committed to ensuring the success of its students. While the global market slowdown and hiring freeze posed obstacles, the CDC continues to work tirelessly to secure promising job opportunities for students. As of now, close to 78% of B.Tech students have received job offers, with the placement season ongoing until the end of July 2025.

Placement participation has been strong this year, with active involvement from leading Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) such as Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), Engineers India Limited (EIL), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL), Oil India Limited (OIL), and MECON Limited. In addition, top Multi-National Companies (MNCs) like Google, Microsoft, Reliance Industries Ltd, Flipkart, D.E. Shaw, Oracle, Unistring Tech Solutions, Accenture Japan, Media.Net, Jaguar Land Rover, Analog Devices, Zomato, MathWorks, Caterpillar, HCL Technologies, Tata Steel R&T, AIRA Matrix, ARM (Advanced RISC Machine), Maruti Suzuki, Applied Materials, L&T Limited, Jindal Stainless Limited, Jindal Steel & Power, Vedanta, Turing, Tiger Analytics, and Tata Steel have also taken part in the placement drive. Moreover, pre-final year B.Tech students have successfully secured internship opportunities with several prestigious organizations.

Industry And Alumni Relations

Alumni Relations

The Alumni Association of IIT Bhubaneswar was established in 2016 with the aim of fostering a lifelong bond between alumni and the institute. Currently, the association has an active membership of 4868 alumni. Furthermore, to enhance coordination and communication between alumni and their alma mater, the Alumni Association has established chapters in various cities across India, including

Career Opportunities Through Alumni: The Alumni Cell actively engages with numerous alumni to facilitate internship and placement opportunities for students at IIT Bhubaneswar. These opportunities, shared by alumni, are continuously communicated to current students throughout the academic year.

Alumni-Student Mentorship Programme: A survey has been conducted among Alumni to seek their support in Mentorship, Placement Support, Competitive Exam guidance, and Foreign Language Training for students. Seventy-Five alumni expressed interest in contributing to these initiatives.  The 1st Alumni virtual connect program was held on 1st February 2025 with active participation from alumni.  The program aimed to reconnect with the fellow alumni around the globe, share recent developments at IIT Bhubaneswar, explore opportunities for collaboration and mentorship.

Common Platform - Discord: In a pioneering move, the Alumni Association of IIT Bhubaneswar has bridged the gap between students and alumni by establishing a common platform on Discord. This platform enables direct interaction between students and alumni, facilitating guidance and assistance. Various interest groups, including UPSC, MBA abroad, MS, MBA India, GATE, start-ups, placements, internships, stocks, and other investments, have been created on Discord. Students can seek guidance from alumni through these channels, and multiple sessions are organized for each interest group.

Events & Awards by the Alumni Association:

IIT Bhubaneswar hosted its 3rd Alumni Meet with panel discussions, a World Café, and STC sessions aimed at strengthening alumni-student connections. The event was inaugurated by the institute's leadership and alumni representatives.

Efforts include newsletters, database creation, and placement collaboration. The alumni office aims to boost responsiveness and connectivity with graduates.

Students exhibited research and start-up ideas, including AI projects and 3D printing ventures, while alumni shared professional insights and mentorship

●_       World Café & STC Meet-Up:

Interactive discussions covered mental health, entrepreneurship, research careers, and senior-junior relationships, emphasizing mentorship and campus life enhancement.

PIWOT Satellite Conference organized on 23-24 January 2025 in collaboration with Global Wheel Foundation. A total 150 participants including 8 PANIIT Alumni attended the Conference. A formal MoU was signed with Global Wheel Foundation to connect with PANIIT Alumni for different purpose including establishing an IIT Bhubaneswar Alumni Chapter in the USA.

 International Relations

The International Relations Office at IIT Bhubaneswar plays a pivotal role in fostering global connections through student and faculty exchange programs with partner institutions abroad. This entails overseeing the application process, facilitating visa arrangements, and offering comprehensive support services to students throughout their exchange experience. Moreover, the office actively cultivates partnerships by signing Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with foreign universities, paving the way for student and faculty exchanges, as well as long-term research collaborations in fields spanning science, engineering, and other mutually relevant areas of interest. Recreational/Extra Curricular activities

IIT Bhubaneswar offers a myriad of opportunities for students to immerse themselves in a rich tapestry of co-curricular and extracurricular pursuits. Sports, Yoga, NSS and NCC are seamlessly integrated into the B.Tech. curriculum's Extra Academic Activity (EAA) component in the first year not only help to develop physical and mental wellness but also provide the students the opportunity to develop interpersonal skills. Extra Academic Activities guided by dedicated Faculty Advisors and faculty mentors and spanning robotics, idea pools, code marathons, finance and business managements athletics, sports, filmmaking, photography, music, dramatics and dance. These activities epitomize the institute's dedication to holistic education.

The campus boasts state-of-the-art facilities, including a gymnasium, cricket grounds, football ground, basketball, badminton, volleyball, squash, table tennis and lawn tennis courts, fostering a vibrant culture of physical fitness and sportsmanship.  Ashwamedha, the annual sports fest of IIT Bhubaneswar, brings sportspersons from all over India to compete for the coveted medal in many sports.

 Additionally, the General Championship is the mega annual Inter-departmental/school Techno-cultural-sports Championship of the institute where students from all department participate in large numbers, fostering a spirit of teamwork, competition, and excellence among students.
