About the Institute

Indian Institute of Technology Dharwad  is one of the third Generation (3-G) IITs, which were established by the Ministry of Education (MoE), Government of India (GoI). It was started in August 2016 under the mentorship of IIT Bombay. Our academic journey began in the Academic Year (AY) 2016-17, with the establishment of four-year Bachelor of Technology (B. Tech.) programs - Mechanical Engineering (ME), Electrical Engineering (EE) and Computer Science & Engineering (CSE).

Currently, Institute offers four other B. Tech. programs - Engineering Physics (EP), Mathematics & Computing (M&C), Civil & Infrastructure Engineering (C&IE), Chemical & Biochemical Engineering (C&BE) as well as a five-year Bachelor of Science-Master of Science (BS-MS) program, a two-year Master of Technology (M. Tech.) Program and a Master of Technology by research (M. Tech. by research)  Program offered by the three oldest Departments of Mechanical, Materials & Aerospace Engineering (MMAE), Electrical, Electronics & Communication Engineering (EECE) and Computer Science & Engineering (CSE).

The first phase of construction of the 470-acre new IIT Dharwad campus is completed and is located two kilometres from the Pune-Bengaluru National Highway (NH4). The campus design is based on the theme of "Sustainable Green Campus", inspired by historical origins of Hubballi Dharwad. In December 2022, IIT DHARWAD was awarded 5-star Rating under Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment (GRIHA), Large Development (LD) Master Plan. The permanent campus of IIT DHARWAD has many eco-friendly design features such as rain water harvesting, treatment and reuse of Municipal waste water using phytoremediation technology. With the availability of transport service, the campus is easy to reach from any point in Dharwad and all the major facilities are within a 10 km radius from the campus. IIT Dharwad is less than 30 km away from Hubballi, the second-largest city in Karnataka.

The academic activities of IIT Dharwad are well-tuned to bring out the best in every student. The academics at IIT Dharwad is focused on bringing fun and joy into the learning process by a judicious mix of rigorous classroom coursework backed up by exciting projects where students enjoy experiential learning by hands-on design-build-operate type activities.

Fee Structure

Academic Structure

IIT Dharwad follows a semester system. An academic year (July-April) consists of two semesters, each of approximately 16 weeks’ duration. The first semester begins in the last week of July and ends by the last week of November. The second semester starts in the first week of January and ends by the last week of April. In each of the semesters, a student is required to register for the relevant courses listed in the curriculum for that semester.

The Institute follows a credit system. Credits are allotted to various courses depending upon the number of lectures, tutorials and laboratory hours per week. The student’s performance in a course is continuously evaluated throughout the semester and culminates in the award of a Grade on a 10-point scale. Performance in a semester is evaluated in terms of the weighted average of grade points secured in all the courses registered in that semester, which is known as Semester Performance Index (SPI). A Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) is the weighted average of the grade points obtained in all the courses registered by the student since the time of joining the Institute. The B.Tech. programs consist of eight semesters spread over four years. The BS-MS in Interdisciplinary Sciences programme consists of 10 semesters and spread over five years.

Rules For Change Branch
