About the Institute

Engineering education at Banaras Hindu University (BHU) Varanasi was initiated in 1919 by the great visionary and patriot, Bharat Ratna Mahamana Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya Ji with the founding of Banaras Engineering College (BENCO). The next stage of development was the establishment of the College of Technology (TECHNO) and the College of Mining & Metallurgy (MINMET). In 1968, the erstwhile engineering colleges of BHU, namely BENCO, MINMET, and TECHNO, were merged to form the Institute of Technology (IT-BHU). On 29th June 2012, IT-BHU became the Indian Institute of Technology (Banaras Hindu University), Varanasi by an Act of Parliament. The Institute, since its inception, has maintained a high academic standard and produced distinguished engineers and administrators. The institute completed its 100 years in 2019 and is committed to taking forward the legacy with rejuvenated vigor and dedication to nation-building. As a mark of recognition of the Centenary Celebrations of the institute, Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi inaugurated the PARAM SHIVAY Supercomputer at IIT (BHU) Varanasi. He also released a postage stamp and postal album, which bore a picture of the main building of IIT(BHU).

IIT (BHU) Varanasi is making significant reforms in the educational ecosystem and is dedicated to implementing the National Education Policy (NEP-2020), a novel vision bringing about a paradigm change in Indian education. Research and development are essential functions of the Indian Institute of Technology (BHU) Varanasi. The Institute promotes multidisciplinary academic programs and research for the country's knowledge-based economy. The institute collaborates with various academic and research institutions of high repute in India and abroad. IIT (BHU), Varanasi, has a global rank of 531 in the year 2025 QS (Quacquarelli Symonds) World University Rankings. Additionally, IIT(BHU) was ranked tenth in the NIRF 2024 Engineering category.

The Institute has 15 departments and 3 interdisciplinary Schools. Central facilities in the Institute include the Supercomputing Centre, Computing and Information Services (CCIS), Central Instrumentation Facility (CIF), Main Workshop, and the Institute Shrinivas Deshpande Library. Besides this, the Center for Faculty Development and Educational Technology extends expert training in pedagogy, course delivery, and assessment.

Academic Structure

The Indian Institute of Technology (BHU) offers the 4-year B.Tech., 5-year B.Arch., 2-year M.Tech./M.Pharm./M.Sc., and Ph.D. degree programs. The institute has ten Engineering Departments (Ceramic Engineering, Chemical Engineering and Technology, Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Mining Engineering and Pharmaceutical Engineering & Technology), three Science Departments (Chemistry, Mathematical Sciences and Physics) and three Interdisciplinary Schools (Biochemical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering and Materials Science and Technology). In addition, the Department of Humanistic Studies was established in the year 2015, while the Department of Architecture, Planning, and Design started its academic activities in 2019-20.

Research and Innovation are integral to the academic activities of the Institute. The academic curriculum encourages undergraduate students to take up research projects and industrial internships. The research and development activities are supported by different National Agencies, viz. Ministry of Human Resource and Development (MHRD), Department of Science and Technology (DST), Department of Biotechnology (DBT), All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and Defense Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) through various programs. The following layout describes the academic opportunities available in the B.Tech. and B. Arch. course structures.

A B.Tech. student has four mutually exclusive options at the end of the 4th semester. The option that a student gets depends on choice and merit. The following are these options.

a) The student can opt for a plain B.Tech. degree. The student doing plain B.Tech. may take up a Stream to get a B.Tech. Honours degree.

b)  A student can do a B.Tech. with a Minor in another discipline (other than the primary discipline). The primary discipline is one in which the student gets admission. A Minor consists of 4 to 6 courses in the chosen discipline (other than the primary discipline of the student) taught 5th semester onwards.

c) Another option is a B.Tech. in the primary discipline with a second major in another branch. For a second major the tenure of the B.Tech. extends to 10 semesters. For example, a B.Tech. in Electrical Engineering with a second major in Computer Science and Engineering.

d) Students with a Minor in a particular discipline can change to a second Major in the same discipline at a later stage subject to seat vacancies and merit. For instance, it is possible for a student who is doing a B.Tech. in Metallurgical Engineering (the primary discipline) with a Minor in Mechanical Engineering to change to a second major in Mechanical Engineering, if there are vacancies.

e) A B.Tech. student can opt for an integrated B.Tech & M.Tech Dual Degree in the primary discipline in 5 years (or 10 semesters). The integrated dual degree (IDD) aims to encourage and promote students to go for advanced studies and research in the primary discipline.

Furthermore, the 6th semester of B.Tech. curriculum in all branches is reserved for Industrial/research internships.

B. Arch. is a 5-year degree. However, B.Arch. students also have access to the Minor and second major options mentioned above (for 4-year B.Tech. students). If a B.Arch. student wants to do a second major; then the degree term becomes 6 years.

Credit System

IIT(BHU) follows the semester system. An academic year (July-May) consists of two semesters each of approximately 18 weeks duration. Each theory and laboratory course has a certain number of credits assigned to it depending on the lecture, tutorial, and laboratory contact hours a week. Each course is coordinated by a Coordination Committee, which has full responsibility for coordinating the course, holding the periodical and end-semester examinations, and awarding letter grades on a 10-point scale on a relative grading basis. A student's performance is measured by the number of credits earned and the Semester Performance Index (SPI)/Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) earned for a semester/course.

Rules For Change Branch

The Branch Change option for UG Programme is discontinued from the session 2025-26.

Faculty

The faculty details are available on the Institute website.

Sixty percent of the processing power is for local use by the IIT(BHU) and BHU research community, and the rest for other CFTIs and research labs across the nation. The system has been commissioned under the Make in India program, and the hardware has been manufactured at a plant in Chennai by the French company Atos. The system is a sophisticated mix of CPUs and GPUs with relevant systems and application software based on open source. Inaugurating the IIT (BHU) Supercomputing Center on 19th February 2019, the Honorable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi said, "...the land of Lord Vishwanath will now contribute in accelerating research in key areas across the Nation by providing fast computation facility through the PARAM Shivay system...”. The Institute has organized a series of hands-on workshops to impart expertise to the user community for the utilization of the facility.
