About the Institute

Established as a College of Engineering in 1961, this Institute was declared as Institution of National Importance under the Institutes of Technology (Amendment) Act 1963 and was renamed as Indian Institute of Technology Delhi. It was then accorded the status of a university with powers to decide its own academic policies, to conduct its examinations, and to award its degrees. In 2018, IIT Delhi was given the status of Institute of Eminence.  Since 2024, IIT Delhi also operates an international campus at Abu Dhabi, UAE.

New Delhi Campus

The New Delhi campus of the Institute is situated at Hauz Khas in South Delhi, well connected by public transport with air, railways, bus, and metro. The Institute campus extends over an area of ~320 acres with many topographical features, imaginatively laid out with picturesque landscape. With clean and wide roads, the campus presents a spectacle of harmony in architectural and natural beauty. A significant fraction  of the students, faculty and staff reside on the campus. The main academic building houses various administrative offices and research facilities along with some teaching facilities. A Lecture Hall Complex houses teaching facilities (classrooms / lecture halls and laboratories). Although each department/centre/school is a separate academic entity/unit, all the academic units together constitute an integrated complex.

Each academic year consists of two semesters and a summer term. The education system is organised around a credit system, which ensures continuous evaluation of a student’s performance and provides flexibility to choose courses so as to facilitate progress at an optimum pace suited to one’s ability, convenience, and interest. Each course is assigned certain number of credits depending upon the class contact hours. A minimum number of credits is to be taken in every semester.  To  qualify for the award of the degree a requisite number of credits need to be completed. The Delhi campus will have a  revised curriculum starting academic session 2025-2026. The revised curriculum emphasises flexibility, hands-on learning, project activity, and also allows minor areas in disciplines outside the major, such as computer science, entrepreneurship, and management. On petition, at the end of the third year, irrespective of the UG discipline, a student can obtain an MTech/MS(R) degree in any of the offered programmes in one extra year. Two new programmes, a BTech in Design and a BS in Chemistry, will start in the upcoming academic year.

As a break from the academic work, students have ample opportunities to explore other interests.  This includes activities like sports and recreation, and encourages creativity and innovation. This is facilitated by student organizations such as Board for Sports Activities, Board for Recreation and Cultural Acitvities, Board for Student Publications, and various technical clubs. The Students Activity Centre and the Mittal Sports Complex provide suchfacilities, includinga swimming pool,  courts for racquet sports, hobbies workshop, seminar rooms, music rooms and other multipurpose rooms for reading and indoor games. The campus also provides such amenities as hospital, shopping centre, bank, post office, community centre, stadium and playing fields. The vibrant student hostel life is an integral part of the rich IIT Delhi experience. Hostels and messes are operated by students.

Abu Dhabi Campus

IIT Delhi - Abu Dhabi (IITD-AD) is the international branch campus of the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, located in Abu Dhabi, UAE. IIT Delhi is among the top STEM institutions in the world and is one of India’s most sought-after institutions for science and engineering education. It serves as a global centre of excellence for research and development in cutting-edge areas of STEM and beyond. IITD-AD represents a visionary step towards expanding the horizons of education and research. IITD-AD started its operations at the Abu Dhabi Campus in January 2024.  As a premier international higher education institution, it attracts students from the UAE, India, and around the globe, where innovation and excellence come together.

For Academic Year 2025-26, IIT Delhi – Abu Dhabi will offer three B. Tech. programs: Computer Science and Engineering, Energy Engineering, and Chemical Engineering.

IIT Delhi - Abu Dhabi offers students the unique opportunity to pursue world-class education and research in the dynamic and culturally rich capital of the UAE. The interim campus of IITD-AD is located at Zayed University, Khalifa City, Abu Dhabi. The campus offers convenient on-campus housing for both male and female students. To support student life, the campus features dining options, laundry services, a library, a fitness centre, a student lounge, and comprehensive security.

Abu Dhabi provides a safe and welcoming environment, seamlessly blending a rich heritage with cutting-edge modernity. International students will find a thriving global hub with excellent infrastructure, diverse culinary experiences, and a plethora of cultural and recreational attractions. As a rapidly growing center for education, research, and technological advancement, particularly in the energy sector, Abu Dhabi offers unparalleled opportunities for personal and professional growth, fostering a truly global learning community.

Credit System

The prominent features of the credit system are: the process of continuous evaluation of a student’s performance, the absence of pass or fail on annual basis and the flexibility to allow a student to progress at the pace suited to his/her individual ability and convenience subject to the regulations of the credit requirements. Each course, except for a few special courses, has a certain number of credits assigned to it depending on its lecture, tutorial and laboratory contact hours in a week. Each course is coordinated by a member of the faculty called the course coordinator. He/she has the full responsibility for coordinating the course, coordinating the work of other members of the faculty involved in the course, holding tests and awarding grades. In case of any difficulty, students are expected to approach the course coordinator for advice and clarification. A letter grade with a specified number of grade points is awarded in each course for which a student is registered. A student’s performance is measured by the number of credits that he/she has earned and by the weighted grade point average maintained by him/her. A minimum number of credits is necessary to qualify for a degree.

Orientation and Registration of new students: To be decided (please see https://home.iitd.ac.in/ for New Delhi campus and https://iitdabudhabi.ac.ae for Abu Dhabi campus)

Commencement of classes:  To be decided (please see https://home.iitd.ac.in/ for New Delhi campus and https://iitdabudhabi.ac.ae for Abu Dhabi campus)
