IIT Palakkad offers BTech programs in five engineering disciplines, MTech programs in six specialisations (Geotechnical Engineering, Manufacturing and Materials Engineering, Computing and Mathematics, Data Science, Power Electronics and Power Systems, System-on-Chip Design), M.Sc. programs in three science disciplines, an M.S. (by Research) program in Engineering and PhD programs in Engineering, Science and Humanities & Social Sciences. A BTech program in Data Science and Engineering starts from this year onwards.

IIT Palakkad is currently functioning from two locations

a)    ‘Nila’ campus which is part of the main campus located at Pudussery, which is about 7 km from Palakkad on the Palakkad-Coimbatore highway, and

b)    a temporary campus within Ahalia Health Heritage and Knowledge Village in the Kozhipara locality is about 25 km from Palakkad railway station and 45 km from Coimbatore airport.

Both campuses have fully functional academic settings, including well-equipped laboratories, classrooms and computing facilities, modern hostels for girls and boys, and sports and fitness amenities. Besides this, vibrant permanent campus with world-class sustainable green buildings is coming up on 500 acres of land bordering the Sahya Mountain range adjacent to the Coimbatore-Kanyakumari national highway.

BTech Programme

IIT Palakkad offers BTech Programmes in four major engineering streams, that is. Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Data Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. The current yearly intake is around 180 students. Please look at the admission brochure for more details regarding student experience and activities. You can take a glimpse of our academic programs here.

Academic Structure

BTech Programme

IIT Palakkad has a flexible credit-based curriculum for its programs. Each academic year has two main semesters. The monsoon semester runs from August to December and the winter semester runs from January to April. The BTech programme is of 8 semesters duration. The dynamic credit-based curriculum allows students to chalk out their graduation plans by offering diverse options to gain wider expertise. This includes taking courses outside their professional major, more open electives, options for minor, double major degrees, BTech-MTech dual degree and BTech Honours by Research options to gain breadth and depth. Highlights of the new UG curriculum can be found here

Every discipline has a curriculum consisting of core and elective courses that are carefully chosen to give a broad grip on the fundamentals of engineering and an in-depth understanding of the respective discipline. Every curriculum has a considerable number of elective courses under different pools. The students have the flexibility to choose the elective course based on their interests and aspirations. There is also a pool of Humanities, Social Science and other general courses which help the all-round development of the students.

There are plenty of opportunities for students to do various projects throughout the programme. The projects are intended to be student-driven, can be hands-on, and product development oriented to encourage start-up and entrepreneurship activities. Alternatively, research-driven projects can also be taken up for those who want to start research early on. The main aim is to allow students to steer their careers in their chosen paths.

IIT Palakkad has a grading policy based on continuous assessment. Grades are awarded on a 10-point scale, and the academic performance is quantified by the Grade Point Average (GPA) and the Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA).

Rules For Change Branch

All the BTech programs have the same curriculum in the first year. IIT Palakkad allows a selected number of students to change their branch based on their academic performance in the first year. The change comes into effect at the end of their first year. The number of students who can make a branch change is limited so that the final strength in any branch doesn’t deviate by much.

IIT Palakkad has well-qualified, energetic, young and experienced faculty members who are in a position to provide high-quality academic experience to students. IIT Palakkad’s faculty members take pride in their commitment towards the teaching-learning process. The research scholars and post-graduate students are engaged as teaching assistants, complementing the faculty members in the effective conduct of the tutorials and laboratory classes.

You are invited to browse through the department-wise list of faculty members at IIT Palakkad here:
