At present, the institute offers a 4 year program leading to the Bachelor of Technology (B. Tech.) degree in Eight disciplines, viz., Computer Science and Engineering (84 intake), Electrical Engineering (84 intake), Mechanical Engineering (83 intake), Chemical Engineering (25 intake), Civil Engineering (intake 35), Metallurgical & Materials Engg. (intake 28), Mathematics & Computing (intake 31) and Engineering Physics (intake 25). In addition to this, provision has also been made for the reservation of 10% supernumerary seats for the foreign nationals in B.Tech. Programme.
The curriculum followed at IIT Ropar provides a comprehensive education, with a view to producing quality
engineer scientists. It facilitates broad based knowledge acquisition and, simultaneously, nurtures a temper of life long learning and exploration. Broad objectives of the new curriculum are the following:
(a) It has focus on producing 21st century engineers and entrepreneurs,
(b) It offers more flexibility to students,
(c) It has novel and unique features to attract the brightest of students,
(d) It has better utilization of manpower and resources,
(e) It encourages industry academia interaction,
(f) It makes students more practical in approach,
(g) It imparts soft/managerial skills in addition to science and engineering fundamentals,
(h) It develops social responsibilities in students, and
(i) It prepares them for innovation.
The Institute follows a credit system. Each course has a certain number of credits assigned to it depending on its lecture, tutorial and laboratory contact hours in a week. This is coordinated by a member of the faculty called the course coordinator. He/she has the full responsibility for coordinating the course, coordinating the work of other members of the faculty in course, holding tests and awarding grades. In case of any difficulty, students are expected to approach the course coordinator and / or faculty advisor of his/her batch, for advice and clarification. Further, on joining every student is provided with a mentor (senior student carefully selected by the Institute) who guides the student in academic, hostel and other related activities.
The student’s performance in a course is continuously evaluated throughout the semester and culminates in the award of Grade on a 10-point scale. Performance in a semester is evaluated as the weighted average of grade points secured in all the courses registered in that semester, which is known as Semester Grade Point Average (SGPA). A Cumulative Grade Point Average (weighted average of the grade points obtained in all the courses registered by the student since they entered the Institute. The teaching programs are characterized by their flexibility and informality. The strong faculty–student interaction on the residential campus provides opportunity to students to work on publications and projects sponsored by the industry and national agencies.
Apart from doing Basic B.Tech. IIT Ropar offers B.Tech with minor, concentration, honours and additional internship programmes.
B.Tech. with Minor: . Students can take 15 credits of the Minor Programme coursework in any other discipline than the major discipline.
B.Tech. with concentration: Students can take 15 credits of Concentration Programme courses within their discipline. For example, Mechanical Engineering students may choose to specialize in Design, Manufacturing or Thermal and fluids etc.
B.Tech. with additional internship: Students can take 15 credits of the additional internship, The student can take the additional internship in their 7th or 8th semester. A student doing Basic B.Tech can finish all requirements in 7 semesters. The internship is allowed for doing projects in Research Institute/ Industry.
B.Tech. with Honours: Students can take 15 credits of Honours-related coursework and 10 credits of Honours Project.
Scope and Descriptions of the courses offered:
Admission to the following UG programmes offered by IIT Ropar, is through JEE (Advanced).
(1) Bachelor of Technology in Chemical Engineering
The Department of Chemical Engineering has been introduced by IIT Ropar from the academic year 2017-18. The department is presently offering UG (B. Tech), and PG (M.Tech.) and Ph.D. programs. The department has dedicated faculty members in the thrust areas of chemical engineering such as Catalysis and Reaction Engineering, Energy and Environment, Multiscale Modeling, Soft Matter Engineering and Transport Phenomena and Thermodynamics. The department is actively engaged in cutting edge research in emerging areas like Complex Fluid Mechanics, Interfacial and Particulate Engineering, Dynamics of Granular Materials, Water Treatment, Mechanics of Living Matter, Computational Fluid Dynamics, Microfluidics, Process Systems Engineering, Scientific Computing, Computational Catalysis, Reaction Kinetics and Modelling, Biomass Conversion Processes, Renewable Energy, and Biophysics. In addition to the conventional core courses, the department is offering numerous state-of-the-art courses in emerging research areas. As of May 2022, the department has 26 PhD Research Scholars, 27 M.Tech. Students and 86 B.Tech. students. The department has research equipment like Viscometer, Force Tensiometer, Mastersizer, Zetasizer, Nanoparticle Tracking Analysis (NTA), Rheometer, Fourier Transform Infra-Red Spectroscopy (FT-IR), Gas Chromatography–Mass Spectrometry (GCMS) and Thermogravimetric Analyzer (TGA). Recently faculty members in the department have been actively involved with research projects from DST, SERB and consultancies with World Bank, MHRD and Government of Punjab.
(2) Bachelor of Technology in Civil Engineering
The B.Tech. Programme in Civil Engineering covers, the fundamental courses and imbibes all traditional aspects of civil engineering including materials, structures, geotechnical, water resources, environment, geomatics and transportation engineering in a holistic mode avoiding unnecessary compartmentalization. Along with strengthening the fundamentals of knowledge in different streams, the UG program also committed to provide the practical orientation thereby preparing students to address various societal problems. Larger emphasis shall be placed upon the engineering sciences with an objective of producing “thinking” engineers capable of tackling unorthodox engineering challenges. In addition, the focus is on related modern developments in the area of earthquake engineering, smart cities, water resources, remote sensing applications, environment and transportation planning.
(3) Bachelor of Technology in Computer Science and Engineering
The Department of Computer Science and Engineering at IIT Ropar offers a highly competitive four year program leading to a B.Tech degree. The curriculum builds strong foundations in all areas of Computer Science and Engineering. In addition, the choice of electives offers the freedom for one to specialize in one or more areas of Computer Science and Engineering. The quality curriculum promotes independent thinking and learning at an individual’s pace. There is great emphasis on hands on training and design as part of course projects. The department strives to provide state-of-the-art infrastructure and facilities to our undergraduate students where they bring their project and research ideas to fruition. The department has taken up the challenge to attract world class faculty in all areas of Computer Science and Engineering. Since the first batch, the industry has always welcomed our graduating students with open arms. Our students have been recruited by top organizations in India and abroad. We hope to continue building on the initial momentum and attract the best students and faculty over the coming years.
(4) Bachelor of Technology in Electrical Engineering
The B. Tech. program in Electrical Engineering attempts to provide the students with a balanced exposure in the these major areas of the discipline: Electronics Engineering, Computer Technology, Analog & digital communication engineering, Control & instrumentation, Electrical machines & power engineering. The core curriculum of the undergraduate program includes at least two core theory courses and two core laboratory courses in each area. This is subsequently augmented with suitable elective courses in third and fourth year. Currently popular electives include VLSI, embedded systems, digital signal processing, medical electronics, digital communication, wireless networks and optical communication. Undergraduate projects included as part of the final year curriculum emphasize experimental work and exposure to hardware in all four areas.
(5) Bachelor of Technology in Mechanical Engineering
The Department of Mechanical Engineering offers B.Tech., M.Tech. and Ph. D programs. The department has faculty in all the major areas of mechanical engineering such as, design and analysis, fluids and thermal engineering, materials and manufacturing. In addition to the conventional core courses, the department offers state-of-the-art courses such as product design and realization, sustainability for engineers, continuum mechanics, medical devices and equipments, biomechanics, noise and vibration, finite element analysis, energy science and technology, robotics and mechatronics, micromanufacturing and tribology. The laboratories have been set up with modern strengthening teaching and research.
(5) Bachelor of Technology in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering
The Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering offers B.Tech. and PhD programs. The Department has faculty in all the major areas of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering. The focus areas of the department are Physical Metallurgy, Extractive Metallurgy, Mechanical Metallurgy, Computational Materials Engineering, Energy Materials, Functional Materials and related areas.
The Department provides a platform for interdisciplinary studies with academia and industry. The curriculum is designed to encourage innovative thinking to enable students to be Industry ready. The Department encourages student-faculty interaction.
(6) Bachelor of Technology in Mathematics and Computing
Department of Mathematics in collaboration with the Department of CSE offers a new programme from the Academic Year 2019-20 namely, B.Tech. in Mathematics & Computing with focus on Artificial Intelligence. This program provides students a formidable combination of Mathematics and Computer Science by concentrating on areas where mathematics and computing are most relevant to each other. The program will prepare graduates well for advanced degrees and careers in a variety of fields in industry. The curriculum is designed in such a way that this programme provides a perfect platform for those who seek strong mathematical and analytical components with a specialization in AI. The electives available to students cover a vast range of topics like mathematical modeling, pure mathematics, theoretical computer science, fluid mechanics, computer architecture, IOT, algorithms, game theory, financial mathematics, data science, time-series analysis and others. There is great emphasis on hands-on experience and the Department is trying to put a lab component in almost every course. The program attracts students with top JEE ranks.
(7) Bachelor of Technology in Engineering Physics:
Department of Physics jointly with the Department of Electrical Engineering offers four years B. Tech. Program in Engineering Physics starting from the Academic Year 2022-23 for highly motivated students. The program is designed to bridge up the gap between Physics and Engineering, and is inclined towards semiconductor technology. The program will prepare the students interested in Physics with an exposure to Engineering. In addition to the basic degree, the students would be able to take concentration program in either Physics or Electrical Engineering. They would also be able to take minor courses from the Departments other than Physics and Electrical Engineering. The students after completing the program, would be trained enough to work in Semiconductor Industry, Finance, other technology-based research etc. in India as well abroad. The program aims for highly motivated students with high JEE ranking.
