About the Institute

The Institute:

National Institute of Advanced Manufacturing Technology, (erstwhile National Institute of Foundry and Forge Technology), Ranchi was established in 1966 by Government of India with the assistance of UNESCO as a specialized institutes in the country, to fulfil the demand of technical manpower in manufacturing sector. The particular emphasis was on Foundry and Forge Technology to meet the demand of trained manpower in the primary metal manufacturing sectors like automobile, heavy engineering, machine, and component manufacturing etc. Two carefully designed advanced diploma courses, namely Foundry Technology and Forge Technology were offered. To push forward the knowledge boundary, four M. Tech programs were introduced, viz. Foundry & Forge Technology, Manufacturing Engineering, Material Science and Engineering, and Environmental Engineering. Subsequently, two B. Tech programs, one in Metallurgical & Materials Engineering and the other in Manufacturing Engineering, were started to reinforce the core framework of Foundry and Forging Technology with the knowledge of materials and manufacturing, and low or no-waste generation. All these catered to the emerging need of the industries. These courses are supported by Engineering Physics, Engineering Chemistry, Engineering Mathematics, Electrical & Electronics Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Computer Science, and Humanities & Industrial Management. Recently, the institute has formed a new department, Department of Electronics and Computer Engineering, and this year onwards the institute is going to start two new B.Tech courses viz. Computer Engineering, and Production & Industrial Engineering.

The visionary endeavour, pursued over the years, has evolved a four-tier academic framework in NIFFT involving Advanced Diploma, B.Tech, M.Tech and Doctoral program with a balanced emphasis on advanced engineering, industrial training, and research. Such ambiance of training and education has attracted the interest of the potential employers and increased the employability of students. Currently, a large segment of the alumni community of NIFFT is holding the positions of leadership in different heavy industries, SME’s, research organizations, and academic institutions (e.g. IIT’s, IIMs) within India and abroad.

In the present scenario, Foundry and Forge sector, owing to their consistent leadership in the global market over the years, fits best in the ‘Make in India’ endeavour. Both the sectors provide large employment and are rapidly embracing the acquired potential in materials engineering and computer-based modelling, simulation, and design.

The call for creation of an independent capability in Manufacturing Technology, with the highest standard has triggered the process of upgradation of NIAMT to a Centre of Excellence by incorporating the important attributes of autonomy. Since 2014, the institute is under active consideration for its inclusion under NITSER Act, by MoE (erstwhile MHRD). Meanwhile, the affiliation of the institute has been transferred from Ranchi University to Jharkhand University of Technology (JUT) in 2018. In the new model, the institute is expected to evolve the complete pathway of component manufacturing technology with the appropriate synergy of computational science and manufacturing technology; this will encompass synthesis of new materials and design of processes; net shape casting and forming; testing and characterization of materials and components; component integrity assessment; component re-engineering and recycling, resources recovery and waste recycling._

Institute enjoys almost 100% placement for B Tech programme._
