IIITDM Kancheepuram is an Institute of National Importance and one of the five IIITs funded by the Ministry of Education. Our vision is to become a premier institute of excellence in design and manufacturing that would create and develop a new generation of engineers and technologists with the ability and mindset to lead Indian industries in a globally competitive economic environment. IIITDM Kancheepuram is one of the first institutes in India to integrate design, business, humanities, and management courses in its dynamic undergraduate engineering curriculum. The pedagogy of problem-based-learning and the method of learning-by-doing mould the young engineers to appreciate and answer complex problems with the aptitude of a designer. What distinguishes IIITDM Kancheepuram is the strong design spine of its undergraduate curriculum. Our engineers are designers who are trained to be product developers. The pillars of the Institute are its five departments - Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Science and Humanities, and the School of Interdisciplinary Design and Innovation – and these departments offer UG, PG, Dual Degree, and Ph. D. programmes.

We offer M. Tech. in Electronics and Communication Engineering with Specialization in Microelectronics and VLSI Systems, Electronics and Communication Engineering with Specialization in Communication Systems Design, Mechanical Engineering with Specialization in Mechanical Systems Design and Mechanical Engineering with Specialization in Smart Manufacturing. We also offer M Des in Interdisciplinary product design and inter-disciplinary Ph.D programmes in core and applied areas of engineering. The faculty members of the Institute are also involved in sponsored and consultancy research projects from reputed industries and government organizations. 

In this crystal jubilee year, we have attained 79% of placement with the highest CTC of 32 Lakhs per Annum and an average CTC of 10.06. Our chief recruiters have been Amazon, AMD, Ericsson, Google, L&T, MathWorks, Microchip, Samsung, and Zoom India. In 2021-22 we have received 4.39 crore rupees as sponsored research grants taking our total funding for research and consultancy to 42 crores. This year, the Department of Mechanical Engineering has received FIST grant in addition to the dept. of ECE which had received last year. We have filed 22 patents this year and published about 280 papers in SCI Journals and International Conferences.

Students from various technical clubs of the Institute have performed remarkably well, despite the limitations posed by the pandemic. Many have endured the strict lockdown measures and covid guidelines of the Institute and still managed to garner positions of repute in national and international events. Mars Rover Team - Team Shunya 2022 has secured the second rank globally and first rank in India in the qualifying round A of the European Rover Challenge. The    SAE club built an all-terrain vehicle and participated in the M-Baja international competition organized by SAE INDIA at Pithampur, Indore, Madhya Pradesh, as one of the top 60 teams after clearing two rounds of eliminations starting with 240 teams.

The Institute has signed an MoU with Saint-Gobain India to award merit scholarships to girl students pursuing B. Tech program at our Institute. Through the scholarship, Saint-Gobain India has committed to donating 2.29 crore rupees to support the education of 40 girl students over a period of 8 years. This will encourage aspiring girl students from underprivileged backgrounds to pursue Engineering in our Institute thereby transforming them into capable professionals in the design and manufacturing industries.

Fee Structure

Total Fee for First Semester including both Institute Fee and Hostel Fee: Rs.99450/- the division of which is given below.

1. Institute Fee Including tuition fee for GN / GN PWD / EWS / EWS PWD / OBC / OBC PWD: Rs 60000/-
3. Hostel Fee Including advance dining charges common for all students: Rs 29200/- 
2. SC/ST and SC/ST PWD students need to pay only total fee of Rs 39450/- (including hostel fee) as they are exempted from  payment of tuition fee of Rs 60000/- 

Academic Structure

Academic programmes being offered at IIITD&M Kancheepuram are novel and differ from conventional counterparts in the ‘experiential learning’ approach adopted in the curricula. In the age of global competition, India is in need of engineering graduates with exposure to design and manufacturing aspects involved in Mechanical, Electronics and Computer Engineering. Our academic programmes imbibe the ‘learning by doing’ principle with most core and allied courses supplemented by exhaustive and dedicated hours of practice. Courses such as Advanced Manufacturing, Product Design, Engineering Design, Embedded Systems, VLSI, etc. to name a few bring in the much needed design focus required in existing engineering curricula.

The Institute is offering Masters level Design program (M.Des) in Electronics & Mechanical Systems from August 2010 onwards and Communication Systems from August 2012 onwards. The program is unique and first of its kind engineering focused post graduate level design programme. IIITD&M Kancheepuram’s M.Des curricula will produce design engineers cum researchers with domain specific engineering design aptitude and skills. The design practice courses in the curricula would equip the engineers to use their creativity to design products, visualize design solutions and hence tackle pressing social issues. The Institute is offering a novel programme "Smart Manufacturing" from the year  2016.

The curricula for all the programs have been framed after extensive deliberations and discussions with IITs, IISc and other reputed Institute faculty members and industry stake holders. The programmes are aimed at providing solutions to current technological challenges in wide domains like robotics, home entertainment, telecommunication automotive systems, etc. Design engineers and researchers passing out from IIITD&M Kancheepuram will find scope and relevance in analog and digital electronics IC companies, embedded systems players, automotive design, consumer product design and manufacturing and knowledge/service based industries. With mastery in domain specific design, engineering skills and required managerial expertise, our graduates can entrepreneur organizations involved in the design and manufacture of commercially successful electronic or mechanical products.
