Established in 2008, IIT Bhubaneswar sets its sights on seamlessly integrating education, research, and industry engagement. Offering a diverse spectrum of programs including B.Tech., B.Sc.-B.Ed, M.Tech., M.Tech. Presently, the Institute boasts a total of 3457 students. Among them, 1,937 are enrolled in Bachelor of Technology and Dual Degree programs, spanning Civil Engineering, Computer Science & Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Engineering Physics, Mathematics and Computing, Mechanical Engineering, and Metallurgical & Materials Engineering. There is a provision for a B.Tech. student to choose an M.Tech. Programme  within the concerned discipline after completion of 3rd year (sliding mode).  The modalities are similar to a 5-year B.Tech.-M.Tech. dual degree programme. 

Moreover, the Institute promotes a border-less interdisciplinary academic environment to encourage the academic staff and students to work together through the concept of Schools. Academic Structure

The credit-based curriculum for B. Tech. programme is spread over 8 semesters and includes summer internship, as well as research projects. For evaluation in a subject, the Institute follows a seven-point grading system with letter grades and the corresponding grade points per credit. The Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) is computed at the end of each semester. The CGPA obtained by a student reflects his/her performance up to and including that semester.

Rules For Change Branch

_Starting from the Academic Session 2024-25, there is no provision to change academic branch for any of the B.Tech. programmes. However, there is a provision for a B.Tech. student to choose an M.Tech. Programme  within the concerned discipline after completion of 3rd year (sliding mode).  The modalities are similar to a 5-year B.Tech.-M.Tech. dual degree programme.

Faculty

At IIT Bhubaneswar, a dynamic faculty cohort drawn from diverse backgrounds fuels the institution's academic prowess. Presently, the faculty body comprises 224 members, including 37 Professors, 1 MGM Chair Professor, 3 Visiting Professors, 78 Associate Professors, and 105 Assistant Professors. Each faculty member brings a wealth of expertise, holding a Ph.D. from prestigious national or international institutions, with many having garnered invaluable postdoctoral research experience abroad. With a keen dedication to excellence, the faculty prioritizes delivering top-tier instruction, spearheading groundbreaking research endeavors, and driving technological advancements forward. Their endeavors have garnered acclaim, securing numerous research and consultancy projects from esteemed entities such as CSIR, DST, DBT, DRDO, ISRO, and DEIT. Facilities

IIT Bhubaneswar currently operates from its permanent campus at Argul, Khurda. All classes take place in the state-of-the-art classrooms and laboratories located on campus. Moreover, students benefit from access to practical training facilities at institutions such as the Central Tool Room and Training Center, Central Institute of Plastics Engineering & Technology, and Institute of Minerals and Materials Technology. The academic campus features Wi-Fi connectivity, modern classrooms equipped with audio-visual aids, well-stocked laboratories, a comprehensive library, high-speed internet, and video conferencing facilities.

Student Life at Institute

_Nestled in its sprawling green campus at Argul, adjacent to the majestic Barunei Hills, IIT Bhubaneswar offers an idyllic setting for the holistic development of its students. Here, academic excellence thrives through a comprehensive educational approach that seamlessly integrates curricular and extracurricular activities. The institute provides comfortable accommodation with essential amenities for both male and female students in its permanent campus hostels. These modern facilities include round-the-clock internet access, a fully-equipped gymnasium, inviting common rooms, and various recreational spaces. Moreover, students have access to 24-hour medical assistance, with emergency care available onsite and in nearby hospitals in Bhubaneswar city for specialized medical needs. Complementing these services is a dedicated counselling cell staffed by the qualified Psychologist-Counsellors and student guides, offering invaluable support to students in their day-to-day lives. The CST includes 3 counsellors, 2 coordinators, and about 58 student guides.

_The Counselling Service Team (CST) at IIT Bhubaneswar is dedicated to promoting the personal, academic, professional, and social growth of students, equipping them with skills to navigate life's challenges. The team provides a safe and confidential space for students to address their concerns and difficulties including behavioural and clinical issues affecting their academic and personal lives. Since CST members are students themselves, they empathize with the challenges faced by newcomers. This mentorship, led by senior CST students under faculty guidance, fosters a supportive culture that strengthens interpersonal relationships among students. With 32 student guides assigned to mentor groups of 8-10 first-year students, personalized support and guidance are readily available.

_Furthermore, IIT Bhubaneswar prioritizes the welfare of its female members through the Women's Welfare Council. This council is committed to creating a safe and inclusive environment that empowers women and addresses their specific needs and concerns. It organizes various initiatives and programs aimed at promoting gender equality, enhancing women's participation in academic and extracurricular activities, and providing support and guidance on issues related to health, safety, and well-being. Through its efforts, the Women's Welfare Council plays a vital role in fostering a culture of respect, equality, and empowerment within the institute community.

Financial Assistance

·         Scholarships / Financial Assistance Provided by the Institute:   The Institute provides Remission of Tuition Fees to eligible students, with criteria based on parental gross annual income. Students whose parental income does not exceed Rs. 5 lakh per annum are eligible. Those with parental income below one lakh per annum qualify for Full Remission of Tuition Fees, while those with incomes between one lakh and five lakhs per annum are eligible for 2/3rd Remission of Tuition Fees.

·         Govt. of India Scholarships (Provided by Govt. of India) : The Institute endorses various Government of India Scholarship Schemes, including the Central Sector Scholarship Scheme for "Top Class Education for Schedule Caste (SC) Students," the Central Sector Scholarship Scheme for "Top Class Education for Schedule Tribe (ST) Students," Scholarships for Students with Physical Disabilities, Post-Matric Scholarships, and the Ishan Uday Scholarship, among others.

·         State Scholarships (provided by different states): The Institute also supports Scholarship Schemes offered by various State Governments through their respective scholarship portals. Examples include the Kalia Scholarship (Government of Odisha), E-Medhabruti Scholarship (Government of Odisha), Mukhya Mantri Medhawi Vidyarthi Yojana Scholarship (Government of Madhya Pradesh), and MAHA-DBT Scholarship (Government of Maharashtra), among others.

·         PM-Vidyalaxmi Education Loan: The Institute supports the PM-Vidyalaxmi Scheme to provide education loans to meritorious students who get admission in the top quality higher educational institutions of the nation so that financial constraints do not prevent any youth of India from pursuing quality higher education. 

Training & Placement

The Career Development Cell (CDC) at IIT Bhubaneswar is dedicated to helping students identify, refine, and achieve their career aspirations by offering personalized one-on-one counselling, continuous guidance throughout the career planning journey, and structured support through various career exploration activities. It aims to equip students with essential lifelong skills and practical tools needed for professional growth, effective job search strategies, and long-term career success, while nurturing well-rounded, confident, and industry-ready professionals capable of managing and shaping their own career paths.

 Despite challenges faced during the 2025-26 placement season, the CDC remains committed to ensuring the success of its students. While the global market slowdown and hiring freeze posed obstacles, the CDC continues to work tirelessly to secure promising job opportunities for students. As of now, close to 85% of B.Tech students have received job offers, with the placement season continuing until the end of July 2026.

 Placement participation has been robust this year, with leading Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) such as Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), Engineers India Limited (EIL), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL), and Gujarat Mineral Development Corporation (GMDC) actively recruiting from a highly talented pool of candidates. In addition, leading multinational and top-tier companies such as Google, Microsoft, Reliance Industries Limited, Flipkart, D. E. Alumni Relations

The Alumni Association of Indian Institute of Technology Bhubaneswar was established in 2016 with the aim of fostering a lifelong bond between alumni and the institute. Currently, the association has an active membership of 5,674 alumni.To strengthen coordination and communication between alumni and their alma mater, the Alumni Association has also established chapters in various cities across India, including:

Common Platform - Discord: In a pioneering initiative, the Alumni Association of Indian Institute of Technology Bhubaneswar has bridged the gap between students and alumni by establishing a common platform on Discord. This platform enables direct interaction between students and alumni, facilitating guidance, mentorship, and professional assistance. Various interest groups have been created on Discord, including UPSC, MBA Abroad, MS, MBA India, GATE, start-ups, placements, internships, stocks, and other investment-related domains. Through these channels, students can seek guidance from alumni, while multiple interactive sessions and discussions are organized regularly for each interest group.

 Events & Awards by the Alumni Association:

A.    4th Alumni Meet of IIT Bhubaneswar

Indian Institute of Technology Bhubaneswar successfully hosted its 4th Alumni Meet on December 27–28, 2025. The two-day event brought together alumni for networking, nostalgic interactions, and meaningful engagement with the institute. Key highlights of the event included campus visits, panel discussions on “Adapting to AI” and “Startups @ IITBBS,” hostel visits, and a heritage trip to Dhauli Hills. The programme concluded with cultural performances, informal interactions, and a farewell dinner at the Guest House.

 

B. Alumni Achievement

 

Sandeep Parmar, an alumnus of IIT Bhubaneswar (2017 batch), received the prestigious Film fare Awards for his outstanding work on the short film Divorce.

 C.    Industry–Academia Interaction Session

An Industry–Academia Interaction Session was organized with Dr. Abhishek Kumar,  M.Tech alumnus (2019–2021) of IIT Bhubaneswar, on February 15, 2026. The session aimed to create awareness about industrial higher-education pathways, including Industrial Ph.D. and M.Tech programmes and also highlighted career opportunities at Kirloskar Group.

 

v  Alumni Engagement Initiatives:

The Alumni Office of Indian Institute of Technology Bhubaneswar continues to strengthen alumni engagement through various initiatives, including the circulation of newsletters, creation and maintenance of alumni databases, and collaboration in placement-related activities. These efforts aim to enhance responsiveness, foster stronger connectivity with graduates, and build a vibrant and supportive alumni network.

 

v  Showcase & Panel Discussions:

Students of Indian Institute of Technology Bhubaneswar showcased their research projects and start-up ideas, including innovative approaches related to adapting to Artificial Intelligence (AI). Alumni actively participated by sharing professional insights, industry experiences, and mentorship, thereby fostering meaningful interaction and collaboration between students and graduates.

v  Higher education programme counselling meeting

The IIT Bhubaneswar Alumni Association, in collaboration with Manas Pratim Pathak, organized an interactive guidance session to support the students and alumni of Indian Institute of Technology Bhubaneswar in securing admissions to their dream universities for MBA, Master’s, and Ph.D. programmes. The 60–90 minute session provided participants with an opportunity to clarify their doubts, seek guidance on higher studies abroad, and gain valuable insights from alumni experiences and mentorship.

v  PAN IIT Details:

Indian Institute of Technology Bhubaneswar organized an insightful career guidance session titled “Domains Demystified” on 23rd August 2025, where industry experts guided students in exploring various professional domains and career opportunities.

 

Another session, “Expert MBA and CAT Guidance,” held on 5th November 2025, provided students with valuable insights, preparation strategies, and guidance related to MBA admissions and CAT examinations.

 International Relations

The International Relations Office at Indian Institute of Technology Bhubaneswar plays a pivotal role in fostering global engagement through student and faculty exchange programmes with partner institutions abroad. The office oversees the application process, facilitates visa arrangements, and provides comprehensive support services to students throughout their exchange experience. In addition, the office actively promotes international collaborations by signing Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with foreign universities. These partnerships facilitate student and faculty exchanges and encourage long-term collaborative research in science, engineering, and other areas of mutual interest.

MoU under processing for signature:

Ø  An MoU with Universiti Malaysia Perlis is currently under processing. The objective of the collaboration is to strengthen, promote, and develop cooperation between the institutions based on equality and mutual benefit.

Ø  A Research Collaboration Agreement (RCA) involving Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, and GRIDCO Limited, India, is also under processing. The primary objective of the collaboration is to jointly undertake “Research Activities on Renewable Energy & Knowledge Exchange Programme” aimed at promoting the large-scale adoption of clean energy technologies for sustainability and decarbonization in Odisha. The collaboration will focus on advanced research and development, development of multi-energy system architectures including agrivoltaics and waste-to-energy systems, establishment of scalable green microgrids, research on grid management and energy storage, and evaluation of real-world use cases to improve energy reliability and create community-driven revenue opportunities.

KOSPIE Scholarship:

Three (03) m.tech. Students and one (01) dual degree student from indian institute of technology bhubaneswar have been selected for the prestigious combined study and practical stays for engineers from developing countries (kospie) scholarship programme offered by the german academic exchange service for the academic year 2026–27.

 Ashwamedha, the annual sports fest of IIT Bhubaneswar, brings sportspersons from all over India to compete for the coveted medal in many sports.

 Additionally, the General Championship is the mega annual Inter-departmental/school Techno-cultural-sports Championship of the institute where students from all department participate in large numbers, fostering a spirit of teamwork, competition, and excellence among students.
