About the Institute

Established in 2009, IIT Indore is one of the newest-generation IITs, yet it has rapidly grown to become a top-tier institution, renowned for its academic rigor, vibrant research ecosystem, and focus on innovation and societal impact. As an Institute of National Importance, IIT Indore has built a dynamic ecosystem that inspires creativity, cultivates critical thinking, and drives innovation. The Institute has made significant strides not only in academic and research excellence but also in contributing meaningfully to society and national development.

IIT Indore continues to evolve its academic offerings to align with the ever-changing needs of society. Guided by the vision of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the Institute has embraced progressive teaching methodologies, including Do-It-Yourself (DIY) modules, project-centric learning, and a flexible Academic Credit Bank System—allowing students to accrue and carry forward credits throughout their educational journey.

What began with just three academic programmes at its inception has now grown into a rich portfolio of 60 diverse programmes spanning engineering, sciences, humanities, and interdisciplinary domains.

To further foster innovation and hands-on learning, the Institute has established cutting-edge facilities such as the Maker’s Space Laboratory and the Professor Deepak Phatak Tinkerer’s Lab. These creative labs empower students to explore their wildest ideas—encouraging them to make, break, remake, and research—building a strong foundation for future innovators, entrepreneurs, and thought leaders.

IIT Indore stands at the forefront of cutting-edge research, with a strong commitment to addressing real-world challenges and contributing to national and global development. The Institute has cultivated a robust research culture that spans across disciplines and directly impacts society.

With over 7,500 international publications in high-impact journals, 700 sponsored research projects, 500 consultancy projects, and more than 90 patents, IIT Indore has established itself as a powerhouse of research and innovation.

While rooted in technological excellence, the Institute also places a strong emphasis on the humanities and social sciences. Recognizing the importance of interdisciplinary engagement, IIT Indore has launched the Jai Prakash Narayan National Centre for Excellence in Humanities to explore the convergence of technology and human values.

To accelerate the journey from research to real-world application, the Institute has developed a Translational Research Ecosystem—a dynamic Lab-to-Land model that transforms theoretical innovations into practical, scalable technologies. This ecosystem bridges the gap between laboratories and industries, ensuring that research outcomes translate into tangible benefits for society.

The Institute is preferred choice to many industries, companies and PSUs for placement owing to the bright minds carefully nurtured for research and innovation. Core profiles in the Computer Science, IT, Software, Machine Learning/Data Science domains have been the major highlights of the Campus Placements in the recent past. While on the domestic front, companies like Goldman Sachs, Infurnia, DEShaw, Razorpay, Oracle, Amazon, Jio Platforms, Walmart, Siemens made the highest number of offers, well-paid international offers were made by Rakuten Mobile Inc., Accenture Japan, Money Forward Inc. and Chowagiken Pvt. Ltd.

IIT Indore is committed to expanding its academic and research activities to align closely with industry needs and societal impact. A key initiative is the introduction of a new elective framework, where students will choose from two baskets starting in their first year:

Societal Basket: Includes courses like Industry Immersion, Rural Engagement, and Design ThinkingProfessional Basket: Focuses on AI, Machine Learning, Quantum Technology, and Entrepreneurship.

Indore City: Indore is the commercial capital of Madhya Pradesh with many industries in the vicinity. It is an educational hub and has institutes of international repute such IIM Indore, Raja Ramanna Center for Advanced Technology (RRCAT), UGC-DAE Consortium for Scientific Research, etc. Indore has a young and vibrant students’ population. The city is well connected by road, rail and air and is geographically located near Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad and Ahmedabad. Academic Structure

The UG and PG curriculum of IIT Indore emphasizes imparting strong experiential learning and giving equal importance to theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience to its budding engineers using inter-disciplinary, humanistic and holistic approach. Consequently, BTech students’ study 16-18 practical courses during their entire program. All the students in their first year of BTech program do practical courses in Chemistry, Physics, Engineering Graphics, Computer Programming, Basic Manufacturing Techniques and Basic Electrical and Electronic Engineering along with their theory courses. Additionally, there are compulsory courses on (i) English language to help the students to improve their communication skills, (ii) Economics course to give fundamental knowledge about micro and macro-economics, (iii) Biosciences course to provide fundamental knowledge and exposure to different aspects of life sciences, (iv) Experimental Engineering Lab to impart practical training on measurement of fundamental quantities, (v) Scientific and social aspects of Environmental Studies to sensitize the students about the importance and conservation of environment and adverse effects of industrial and daily activities on it.

From AY 2023-24, course curriculum has been revised based on the mandate of NEP-2020. In the revised program, UG students can take a large number of department as well as institute level electives from the 2nd semester onwards of their UG program which will enable them to get exposure to different advanced topics of their own branch as well as other interdisciplinary subjects. A laboratory known as “Maker’s Space” has been introduced in the first year of their study to enhance their innovation, creativity and product development skill. The Institute UG curriculum enables its BTech students to make their BTech project research oriented with 6-7 months duration which can be done either outside the institute or within the institute by freeing 7th semester of BTech program from any type of coursework. The institute also provides funding to some deserving and high quality BTech projects as well as the Institute awards the Best BTech Project among the graduating batch in its annual Convocation. Many 8th semester open elective courses are cross listed for both PG and PhD students to enhance the interaction between the UG and PG students. Other than this, in the AY 2025-26 onwards, the institute introduced Professional and Societal-connect courses of small credit for all UG students to enhance their understanding in different advanced topics such as Quantum Computing, Robotics, Artificial Intelligence and make awareness about the Societal problem such as Rural development. Also, in the revised program, credit based optional summer internship has been incorporated into the curriculum to encourage students to gain industrial experience.

IIT Indore also provides an opportunity to its BTech students to convert their program into a 5 Year BTech + MTech Dual Degree program during 6th semester in some of the departments (subject to availability of BTech + MTech Dual Degree program in the concerned department).
