Academic Structure

B. Tech. programme

IIT Palakkad has a flexible credit-based curriculum for its programmes. Each academic year has two main semesters. The monsoon semester runs from July to December and the winter semester runs from January to May. The B. Tech. programme is of 8 semesters duration. The dynamic credit-based curriculum allows students to chalk out their graduation plans by choosing from diverse options to gain wider expertise. This includes taking courses outside their professional major, more open electives, options for minor, double major degrees, B. Tech.-M. Tech. dual degree and B. Tech. Honours by Research options to gain breadth and depth. Highlights of the UG curriculum can be found here

Every discipline has a curriculum consisting of core and elective courses that are carefully chosen to give a broad grip on the fundamentals of engineering and an in-depth understanding of the respective discipline. Every curriculum has a considerable number of elective courses under different pools. The students have the flexibility to choose the elective courses based on their interests and aspirations. There is also a pool of Humanities, Social Science and other general courses which help the all-round development of the students.

There are plenty of opportunities for students to do various projects throughout the programme. The projects are intended to be student-driven, can be hands-on, and product development oriented, to encourage start-up and entrepreneurship activities. Alternatively, research-driven projects can also be taken up for those who want to start research early on. The main aim is to allow students to steer their careers in their chosen paths.

IIT Palakkad has a grading policy based on continuous assessment. Grades are awarded on a 10-point scale, and the academic performance is quantified by the Grade Point Average (GPA) and the Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA).

Rules For Change Branch

All the B. Tech. programmes have the same curriculum in the first year. IIT Palakkad allows a selected number of students category-wise to change their branch based on their academic performance in the first year. The change comes into effect at the end of their first year. The number of students who can make a branch change is limited so that the final strength in any branch does not deviate by much.

Faculty

IIT Palakkad has well-qualified, energetic, young and experienced faculty members who are in a position to provide high-quality academic experience to students. IIT Palakkad has a total of approximately 144 faculty members, who take pride in their commitment towards the teaching-learning process. The research scholars and post-graduate students are engaged as teaching assistants, complementing the faculty members in the effective conduct of the tutorials and laboratory classes.

You are invited to browse through the department-wise list of faculty members at IIT Palakkad here: https://iitpkd.ac.in/faculty-list

Facilities

IIT Palakkad has a well-stocked central library. Apart from text and reference books, the library has a collection of magazines and newspapers, and provision to access online material. The central library is functional from 9 am to 12 am on weekdays and from 9 am to 7 pm on weekends. The institute also has several well-equipped computer labs that can be accessed round the clock, where access to e-books and course materials is provided through the learning management system Moodle. The institute has several classrooms and an auditorium equipped with Wi-Fi enabled state-of-the-art multimedia facilities. All the student laboratories are well established and have the latest equipment. In addition, there is an innovation centre (Csquare) which is well-equipped for the fabrication of any prototype, proof-of-concept designs or project work in soft and hard materials. Prominent equipment includes 3D printer, computer numerical controlled (CNC) plasma, router, hot wire and laser cutters for working with metal, thermocol, wood, and acrylic. These facilities are extensively used by students and faculty for various courses and research projects.

IIT Palakkad has set up the Central Instrumentation Facility (CIF), Central Micro-Nano Fabrication Facility (CMFF), Central Facility for Materials and Manufacturing Engineering (CFMM), and ‘Chandra’ the High-Performance Computing Cluster with the primary objective of supporting the research activities of its faculty, students, Ph.D. scholars and Postdoctoral researchers. The facilities house a wide range of sophisticated analytical and fabrication equipment available to the research community. IIT Palakkad has also set up a real-time air quality and weather monitoring station that continuously monitors and reports real-time data on air pollutants and meteorological parameters. The facilities are envisaged to nourish collaborative research between IIT Palakkad and other academic and industrial organizations.

IIT Palakkad is a fully residential campus, with separate hostels for girls and boys. The Institute has a total of 5 hostels with all essential facilities. The student-run mess operates at two locations within the campus. In-addition, there is an amenity center which caters to day-to-day needs of the students, staff and faculty. Hostel amenities include solar heaters for hot water, spacious dining hall, well-equipped recreational area, indoor games area, fitness centre, RO-based drinking water system, and heavy-duty washing machines in each of the hostels. There are daily shuttle services between the campus and Palakkad town.

The Institute has an in-house clinic with resident doctor and nurse. All students of IIT Palakkad are given a medical insurance scheme on a yearly subscription. In addition, the Institute has signed MoUs with nearby hospitals for cashless medical care.

Professional counselling service is in place to provide professional help to students when they experience social/emotional issues. Two resident counsellors are available in the hostel to work in proximity to the students. This is in addition to the anonymous online counselling service for which the institute has tied up with a professional agency.
