About the Institute

Indian Institute of Technology Tirupati is a third-generation IIT that was announced in 2014 by the Government of India along with five other IITs at Palakkad, Jammu, Bhilai, Goa, and Dharwad. IIT Tirupati launched its academic programme with the support of its mentor Institute, IIT Madras, on August 5, 2015, from a temporary campus situated in Tirupati.

IIT Tirupati is the first among the third-generation IITs to have laid its foundation stone in March 2015. The 548 acres of permanent campus site is located near Yerpedu on Yerpedu-Venkatagiri Highway (NH565). The campus is well connected by air (Tirupati airport is 12 km), rail (Renigunta Junction is 14 km) and bus services. The construction of six blocks of hostels, workshops, laboratories, computer centre, and classrooms has been completed on the permanent campus and have been operational since 2018. The campus has received two sustainability awards and was ranked 6th under the Swacch Campus awards. All classes and laboratories are held on the permanent campus.

The Master Plan for the Institute has been prepared for a 12,500 students campus. The buildings in the academic zone house various departments, laboratories, and administrative offices, hostels accommodate about 1,500 students, and a residential zone with 188 apartments to house faculty and staff members. The majority of the Phase-I construction, including sports facilities, is expected to be completed by 2022.

IIT Tirupati offers academic programmes to produce outstanding Engineers, Technologists and Scientists who are capable of addressing the societal needs to enhance the quality of life of people. Since Engineering is Applied Science, more emphasis is laid on theoretical knowledge and practice-oriented laboratories.

Programmes at IIT Tirupati are being planned to nurture innovation, creativity, teamwork, communication skills, ethics, and societal interaction. With the objective of creating technologists who are conscious of social, environmental and sustainable issues, courses in Humanities and Social Sciences are given due importance in the curriculum.

B.Tech in Engineering Physics is introduced from the academic year 2024-25. The B.Tech. Engineering Physics at IIT Tirupati is a blend of Physics, Electrical and Electronics engineering that trains and allows students to pursue academia as well as industry after completion of the program. The program offers utmost flexibility to the students to specialize in any of the subfields of Physics that not only include emerging and industry oriented fields like quantum technologies, quantum materials, plasma physics, optics, soft-matter physics but also more fundamental ones like atomic & molecular physics, light-matter interactions, high energy physics, astrophysics and cosmology. Students who are more electrical engineering oriented will have opportunities to get trained in electronics and communications engineering with adequate core and elective courses in these, thus opening up relevant industries for them post completion. The flexible program structure can accommodate semester-long internships and plenty of free elective courses that can be taken in other departments, thus giving utmost freedom to choose desired careers afterwards that are not limited to Physics or Electrical Engineering.

In all the B.Tech programmes, credit based curriculum for 8 semesters will be followed. Each course is evaluated on a 10-point grading system with letter grades. The Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) is calculated at the end of each semester.  At the end of the sixth semester, based on academic performance, students can opt for the dual-degree programme.  Under the dual-degree programme, the student can complete both B.Tech and M.Tech degrees in five years. In line with the NEP the B.Tech program structure can accommodate long internships and plenty of free elective courses that can be taken in other departments, thus giving utmost freedom to choose desired careers.

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and Master of Science (MS) by Research in all the streams have been started from the academic year 2017-18. Currently, the Institute offers the following postgraduate programmes:

M.Tech programmes are offered  in Civil Engineering (Environmental & Water Resources Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Structural Engineering, Transportation & Infrastructure Engineering), Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering (Design & Manufacturing), Mechanical Engineering (Thermal Engineering and Energy systems), Electrical Engineering (Signal Processing & Communication, RF and Microwave Engineering, Microelectronics and VLSI) and Computer Science & Engineering.

M.Sc. programmes are offered in Chemistry, Mathematics & Statistics, and Physics.

The Master of  Public Policy (MPP) programme is introduced from the academic year 2022-23.

Rules For Change Branch

Under Regulation 5.0 of the B.Tech Ordinances & Regulations, Change of branch is be permitted subject to the following rules:

  3. In making a change of branch, the strength of a class should not fall below the existing strength by more than ten percent and should not go above the sanctioned strength by more than ten percent. For this purpose, the strength in both cases refers to the total strength of the students in the class.

  4. However, a minimum of one student will be eligible for consideration for change of branch from each discipline at the end of the first year, irrespective of the limitation in Point(3) above.

  5. If a student with a higher CGPA is not offered a particular branch because of other constraints, this should not be offered to any other students with a lower CGPA even if he/she is eligible on the basis of the existing norms.
