About the Institute

Indian Institute of Technology Dharwad (IIT Dharwad) is an autonomous premier Science and Technology Institute established by the Ministry of Education, Government of India in 2016. Academic activities at IIT Dharwad commenced in July 2016 with B.Tech. course being offered in three core branches, namely, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. The institute started offering B. Tech in Engineering Physics from 2021 and three more new programs from 2022 i.e., B. Tech in Civil and Infrastructure Engineering, B. Tech in Mathematics and Computing & B. Tech in Chemical and Bio-Chemical Engineering. In addition, IIT Dharwad is also offering a five years integrated program called Bachelors of Science and Master of Science in Interdisciplinary Sciences from 2022.

The current campus of IIT Dharwad has been established within the WALMI (Water and Land Management Institute) campus (135 acres), which is adjacent to Dharwad bench of High Court Belur, on the National Highway (NH-4) that connects Mumbai-Bengaluru. With the availability of regular transport service, the campus is easy to reach from any point in Dharwad and all the major facilities are within a 10 km radius from the campus. IIT Dharwad is less than 30 km away from Hubli (Hubballi), the second-largest city in Karnataka. WALMI has been generous in providing the necessary infrastructure for the students' hostels, classrooms, laboratories etc. The first phase of construction of the 470-acre new IIT Dharwad campus is completed and is located two kilometres from the Pune-Bengaluru National Highway (NH4).

The academic activities of IIT Dharwad are well-tuned to bring out the best in every student. The academics at IIT Dharwad is focused on bringing fun and joy into the learning process by a judicious mix of rigorous classroom coursework backed up by exciting projects where students enjoy experiential learning by hands-on design-build-operate type activities. The exciting journey commences with the first year “Introduction to hands-on-engineering” course where, unlike in the usual workshop course, faculty members from Mechanical, Electrical and CS branches train the students on “mechatronic systems” approach.

Academic Structure

IIT Dharwad follows a semester system. An academic year (July-April) consists of two semesters, each of approximately 16 weeks’ duration. The first semester begins in the last week of July and ends by the last week of November. The second semester starts in the first week of January and ends by the last week of April. In each of the semesters, a student is required to register for the relevant courses listed in the curriculum for that semester.

The Institute follows a credit system. Credits are allotted to various courses depending upon the number of lectures, tutorials and laboratory hours per week. The student’s performance in a course is continuously evaluated throughout the semester and culminates in the award of a Grade on a 10-point scale. Performance in a semester is evaluated in terms of the weighted average of grade points secured in all the courses registered in that semester, which is known as Semester Performance Index (SPI). A Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) is the weighted average of the grade points obtained in all the courses registered by the student since the time of joining the Institute. The B.Tech. programs consist of eight semesters spread over four years. The BS-MS in Interdisciplinary Sciences programme consists of 10 semesters and spread over five years. During the first semester all branches will have a common curriculum.

Facilities

The temporary campus of IIT Dharwad (WALMI campus) has all the facilities, including classrooms, an auditorium, seminar room, library, a computer center, several laboratories, faculty offices and cafeteria.
