Academic Structure

The undergraduate programs at Indian Institute of Science are designed to provide strong academic foundations, interdisciplinary learning, hands-on laboratory experience, and exposure to innovation and research. The curriculum emphasizes analytical thinking, problem-solving, computational and design skills, and industry-relevant training, preparing students for careers in technology industries, research, entrepreneurship, and higher studies.

Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech.)

The B.Tech. programs at IISc are four-year programs organized into eight semesters, requiring a minimum of 128 credits for the award of the degree. The curriculum provides strong foundations in mathematics, basic sciences, engineering sciences, computation and design, followed by advanced disciplinary specialization and application-oriented learning.

The initial semesters comprise a common foundational curriculum covering mathematics, physics, chemistry, engineering sciences, computing, humanities and communication skills. In the later semesters, students undertake discipline-specific core courses, electives, laboratory courses, and design projects aligned with emerging technological domains and industry requirements.

The B.Tech. programs are offered in:

  • Aerospace Engineering
  • Materials Science and Engineering
  • Mathematics and Computing
  • Mechanics and Computing

The programs are designed to prepare students for careers in advanced technology industries, research and development organizations, entrepreneurship, and higher studies. Students benefit from IISc’s strong academic and industry ecosystem in Bengaluru, with opportunities for interdisciplinary learning, innovation, and interaction with leading technology organizations and research laboratories.

Students also have opportunities to undertake optional faculty-guided Independent Study Projects (ISPs) during the seventh and eighth semesters, enabling deeper exploration of specialized topics and emerging technologies. In addition, students may undertake a major project in the eighth semester involving research, design, computational modelling, experimentation, or technology development under faculty supervision. Such projects can also be carried out in industry or other academic institutions subject to fulfilling certain academic requirements.

Students admitted to the B.Tech. programs in Aerospace Engineering and Mathematics and Computing have the opportunity to continue for a fifth year leading to the award of an M. Tech. degree, subject to satisfying the academic eligibility requirements prescribed by the Institute. Students in all four BTech programs have the opportunity to opt for a two-year M. Tech. program in eligible disciplines after their third year subject to fulfilling certain academic requirements.
