About the Institute

The Institute

The National Institute of Technology Meghalaya is one among the thirty-one NITs in India established in 2010 under the NIT Act 2007 (Amended 2012) of the Parliament of India as an Institute of National Importance with full funding support from the Ministry of Education, Government of India. Presently, the institute operates from a well-equipped campus in Shillong. Its permanent campus is under development at Cherrapunjee. In the year 2023, the institute has started partial operations in Cherrapunjee campus with Central Instrument Facility and Central Workshop while other facilities are in pipeline.The campus will be upgraded further with large scale state-of-the-art infrastructures and all the necessary modern amenities while maintaining harmony with the serene environment of Cherrapunjee. The vision is to build a Center of Excellence in education and research in the fields of science and technology through vibrant academic activities to serve the society and nation at large. Despite its being a new institute, NIT Meghalaya boasts of exceptional teaching, learning and research credentials and has featured within the top 100 ranked engineering institutes of the nation consistently in National Institute Ranking Framework (NIRF), since its inception in 2016. In 2022, the institute has been ranked 1st among new NITs, 2nd among NITs in north-eastern region and overall 60th under Engineering category of NIRF.

The Curriculum

NIT Meghalaya has nine different departments consisting of five engineering departments, three basic science departments and Humanities and Social Science department. The engineering departments are: Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering and Mechanical Engineering, whereas the science departments are: Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. The institute offers courses through B.Tech. M. Tech. M.Sc. and Ph.D. programmes. The curricula for all these programmes have been redesigned with a rigorous brainstorming exercises and inputs from experts from other institutes of higher learning, industries of various kinds, practicing engineers and senior alumni. The present curriculum presents a state-of-the-art basket for all the programmes. It encompasses the entire range of studies from fundamentals to advanced study and the applications keeping an eye on the present day’s requirement as well as the future prospective and will help the students to become industry-ready. Highlights of the new curricula are: Open Electives, Professional Electives, Core courses, Vocational Courses, Laboratory courses, Industry visits, Internship etc.

The new curriculum in line with National Education Policy 2020 provides a lot of scopes for the students to develop various kinds of skills as per their own aptitude and interest. Some of the examples include: Simultaneous Theory and Laboratory courses, Courses on Industrial Safety and Entrepreneurship, Mini and Major Projects, Mandatory Industrial Internship, Establishment of Knowledge Center, Incubation Center, and Skill Development Center etc., for developing knowledge and designing and creating products.

In the year 2021, the B.Tech programmes of Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering departments are accredited by National Board of Accreditation (NBA). Moreover, other engineering departments are in the process of National Board of Accreditation.

Academic Structure

The Institute offers the B. Tech programme in the following five disciplines:

-       Computer Science and Engineering

-       Electronics and Communication Engineering

-       Electrical and Electronics Engineering

-       Mechanical Engineering

-       Civil Engineering

The Institute also offers M. Tech, M.Sc and Ph. D programmes in various disciplines.

Rules For Change Branch

Branch change is allowed to the student in the second year based on the 1st year performance, subject to the following criteria:

1)  Minimum 8.00 CGPA upto 2nd Semester without any backlog.

2)  No branch will have lesser than 80% of the sanctioned strength of students after branch change.

3)  No branch will exceed 10% of the sanctioned strength of students after branch change.

Faculty

The current faculty consists of sixty three regular faculties, eleven adjunct faculties, one visiting faculty and five trainee teachers with degrees from premier institutions within the country as well as abroad. In addition to academic activities, the faculty of the Institute engage themselves in research, consultancy and various outreach activities.

Brief information about various central facilities

Computer Center

Computer Center is an important part of NIT Meghalaya. It caters to all the departments, centers and sections from internet to computing resources for research activities, training, workshops and daily activities. Campus wide networking comprises high bandwidth fiber optic backbone of 1 GBPS provided by NKN which is the primary link that connects all the corners of the institute and a backup link 100Mbps redundant/secondary in case of failure. The college data network is also extended to the hostels through the fiber optic backbone. Students, staff, faculties and guests can connect with desktops, laptops, mobile phones to a wireless access point. Wi-Fi access points are set up in important junctions in hostels and in the campus hallways and inside the library where students do their academic work independently. 

Two CC labs are well equipped with 50 machines each with both LAN and WiFi connectivity and preloaded with main software tools for mathematical computations like MATLAB, Microsoft software and other computer programming related software. Computer Center also provides G-suite services – a brand of cloud computing, productivity and collaboration tool. It includes gmail, drive, docs, calendar, Google Meet and many more. The Institute website is also maintained by the center which is the first point of contact between the institute and the public.

Central Library

Central Library, which is the heart of the Institute, was established in 2012. It serves as a creative and innovative partner in supporting the teaching, learning, and research activities of the Institute. The Library holds the knowledge resources predominantly related to Science and Technology, Humanities, Management & other allied subjects. The Library is computerized with an integrated system connected to the Campus Network, providing an e-resource facility to the institutional community. The entire Library collection, including the online databases, is made available through Institute's network. Library collection can also be searched through Web OPAC. The Library is a regular subscriber of full-text databases such as Science-Direct, Springer-Link, ACM Digital Library, IEL (GP), ASCE, ASME and other e-resources for the benefit of its user community. The library also has around 6000 e-books on popular publishers such as Pearson, Wiley, Elsevier and Springer Nature to cater to the growing information needs of the students. The Library has also subscribed to the KNIMBUS Remote Access tool. The students, faculty members, and research scholars can access all the e-resources subscribed by the Library and open access journals remotely using KNIMBUS.

Central Workshop

The Central Workshop is the central facility for imparting training to the undergraduate students of all branches. Students of all branches use workshop facilities for fabrication of their minor and major projects. This facility is used for the manufacture of components, parts and repair work. The facility is also utilized by the Faculties, the PhD students and the M.Tech students of the institute for their research and consultancy activities. The workshop comprises of Machine Shop, Foundry Shop, Fitting Shop, Welding Shop, Carpentry Shop, Electrical Shop, Automobile shop, Plumbing shop, which are well equipped with latest tools and equipment.

Central Instrument Facility

The institute has established a Central Instruments Facility in the year 2022 at the permanent campus with necessary high-end research tools and equipment's for carrying out quality research and consultancy work in the premises of the institute.

Medical Facility 

Doctor and paramedical staffs are available round the week. NITM has also MoU with the best hospitals in the city of Shillong. The institute has its own 24x7 ambulance service.

Brief information about various departments

Department of Civil Engineering

The Department of Civil Engineering has been in existence since July 2012. With an intake capacity of 30 students, the Department offers a four years (eight semesters) B. Tech programme in Civil Engineering Discipline. The department has initiated its Ph.D. programme since 2014, in various areas of Civil Engineering viz., Environmental Engineering, Structural Engineering, Water Resources Engineering and Geotechnical Engineering. Since July 2018 onwards, the Department has been offering a two years (four semesters) M. Tech programme in Structural Engineering. The Department is offering a common course for 1st year students on Engineering Drawing.Additionally, the Department actively encourages curriculum development activities by creation of new courses and up-gradation of existing courses. The Department undertakes consultancy works in various related areas of civil engineering, to provide knowledge and intellectual inputs to the industry and other organizations and also organizes seminars/symposia for professional interaction. The Department also aims to contribute to interdisciplinary academic and research activities of NIT Meghalaya.

The laboratories equipped with state-of-art instruments in the department are Structural Engineering Lab, Water resource Engineering Lab, Environmental Engineering Lab, Transportation Engineering Lab, Geotechnical Engineering Lab, Surveying Lab, Engineering Geology Lab, Engineering Drawing Lab, Hydraulics Lab.

Department of Computer Science & Engineering

The Department of Computer Science & Engineering, NIT Meghalaya offers B. Tech degree in Computer Science and Engineering discipline. This U.G Programme in Computer Science and Engineering is perhaps the most popular Programme in NIT Meghalaya, with an average intake of 30 students per year. The department has adequate facilities to support these teaching activities. It has a well qualified and experienced faculty team. The Computer Science and Engineering department makes all efforts in imparting high quality education to its highly motivated students. One of the aims of this department to play its role of producing Computer Engineers ready to satisfy the needs of the Computer and IT world. The Department is also actively involved in various Research activities.The department also started its M. Tech program from 2014 with an initial intake of 20. There is also a PhD programme under which research scholars are admitted twice a year.

The laboratories equipped with state-of-art instruments in the department are Computing Lab, Network Lab, Data Science Lab, Wireless Sensor Networks Lab, High Performance Computing Lab, Computer Vision and Machine Learning Lab, Embedded Systems Lab, Real time Operating Systems (RTOS) Laboratory, HP Center of Excellence for Software Engineering, Cloud Computing and Network Security

Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering

The Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) was established in 2010 with the inception of National Institute of Technology Meghalaya. The department offers B. Tech Programme with an intake capacity of thirty & M. Tech Programme with an intake capacity of twenty in Electronics and Communication Engineering and Ph.D. program in various specialized areas of Electronics and Communication Engineering. Further, the department has bagged DST-FIST and Special Man-power Development programme-Chip to Start-up, ISRO, etc. The major objective of the Department is to impart high quality technical education and research with a strong foundation in Electronics and Communication Engineering.The major areas of faculty expertise of the department include VLSI Systems, High Performance Computing, Signal Processing, Digital Signal Processing, Communication and RF & Microwaves Engineering, High Speed and Low Power VLSI, Computer Arithmetic, Wireless Sensor Networks, Cognitive Radio, Antenna Design and Signal Processing.

The laboratories equipped with state-of-art instruments in the department are Basic Electronics & Device Lab, Communications Systems Lab, Microprocessors and Microcontrollers Lab, Digital Design Lab, Digital Signal Processing Lab, RF-Microwave and Fiber optics Lab, Digital System Design Lab,  Low Power VLSI Lab, High performance computing Lab, MEMS computing Lab, Image processing Lab, Machine learning Lab, Center of Excellence in Advanced Wireless Communication Systems 

Department of Electrical Engineering

The Department of Electrical Engineering started since the inception of NIT Meghalaya. Presently the department offers B.Tech, M.Tech and PhD Programs. The B. Tech program started in 2010 with an intake of 30 students at NIT Surat and since 2014 onward M.Tech program has been started with an intake of 20 students offering specialization in Power & Energy Systems. Presently there are full time and part time research scholars, registered for the PhD program in diverse specializations. The Department aims to impart high quality education to the students and carry out fundamental and industry oriented research work. The research interest of faculties encompass various areas of electrical engineering such as Power system Control, Smart Grid Technology, Synchrophasor Technology, Power Quality and Renewable energy integration to grid, Power Electronics & Drives, Control System and Instrumentation, Signal Processing and Biomedical Instrumentation, High Voltage Engineering etc.

The department have well-equipped laboratory facilities to the students such as Basic Electrical Engineering Lab, Electrical Machine Lab, Network and Systems Lab, Digital Electronics Lab, Power System Lab, Computational Lab, Control & Instrumentation Lab, Power Electronics Lab, Electric Drives Lab, Microprocessor Lab, Microcontroller & Embedded Systems Lab. Specialized simulation softwares like Matlab, Sincal, FLUX, PSPICE, PSIM, PSS@E, EMYP etc. are available with the department to carry out experiments and research activities. Besides, faculty of the EE department are very actively publishing papers in reputed journals and conferences such as IEEE, IET, Elsevier, Springer, Taylor and Francis, Wiley etc. Moreover, faculty members of EE department have received several sponsored research projects from various agencies like SERB-DST, CPRI, REC and State Council of Science Technology & Environment (SCSTE, Govt. of Meghalaya).

Department of Mechanical Engineering

The Department of Mechanical Engineering was started from the session, July 2013. The department is offering 4-years B.Tech Programme in Mechanical Engineering with an intake capacity of 30. The department consists of bright, young and highly potential experienced faculty members. Moreover, the department has one adjunct faculty, one visiting faculty and one Fulbright faculty. The main objective of the department is to cater the students with class tutorial and in hand practice with the state-of-the-art laboratories and workshop. The different laboratories in the department are, Fluid Mechanics Lab., Theory of Machine Lab., Thermal Science Lab., Strength of Material Lab., Material Science Lab., Metrology and Instrumentation Lab., Advanced Manufacturing Lab., and Computational Lab.

The basic aim of the department is to provide the students with perfect principles and practice in Mechanical Engineering, which will help them to serve the society and address a variety of needs. Another, objective of the department is to come up with courses containing interdisciplinary concepts keeping in view of the advancement of today's world in the field of robotics, mechatronics, nanotechnology etc. The department also plans to have industry-academic collaboration so that both can complement each other in study, research and overall development. Brief information about various centers

Center for Robotics and Mechatronics

The center for Robotics and Mechatronics started in the year of 2019, with the faculty members from various departments like, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering and Computer Science Engineering. Aim of the Center is to cater for fundamental and applied research to enhance creative and innovative aspects in the field of Robotics and Mechatronics to translate robotics in daily lives with moral and ethical standard. Implementation of mechatronics system in various field to improve standard of socio economic status. The center developed Robotics and Machatronics facilities to improve teaching and research standard. The center also involved to train students to implement Robotics and Mechatonics in daily life appliances. Moreover, the Center for Robotics and Mechatronics offered finishing school program for UK graduate students under UKIERI program.

Center for Technology Enabled Learning

The Center for Technology Enabled Learning (CTEL) had been established in 2016 to allow faculty members of the Institute as well eminent experts from other institutions and organizations to develop course materials including high-quality video contents, which will be made available to the students through on-line streaming technology. A state-of-the-art studio has been set up in the center where facilities for both content creation and content distribution are being provided. The CTEL recording facility is equipped with the following state-of-art electronic systems: Panasonic SMART LED Screen Display cum White Board, Digital Wireless Hand-held Head-worn Microphone Sets (Sennheiser, DU-3-EU-R), Lumens PTZ Cameras (Lumens, VCA50P), Crestron Airboard Whiteboard Capture System (Crestron, CCS-WB-1), Digital Graphics Engine (Crestron, DGE-100), HDMI Switcher (Crestron, HD-MD6x2-4K-E), HD Scaling Auto Switcher and HDMI (Crestron, HD-MD-300C-EW), Media Presentation Controller along with Table-top Kit (Crestron, MPC3-302W), Magnetic Whiteboard, Digital Metallic Podium and LED Light Fixtures (Crompton, LTCSN36CDL). Through this studio, faculty members of NIT Meghalaya and also neighboring Institutes can participate in developing contents and directly assist in national initiatives like NPTEL and SWAYAM. More than 800 hours of video lectures have been recorded at CTEL till date.

Center for Innovation, Incubation and Entrepreneurship

The Center for Innovation Incubation and Entrepreneurship has been established in 2018 in order to promote the innovation activities among the students, alumni and faculty of NIT Meghalaya. It also aims at sensitizing the stakeholders about the benefits and positive challenges and bringing out their creativity for the benefit of the society in general. The key targets of the center are: a) To provide infrastructure and expertise support to those interested in any kind of innovation and also to solve the industrial problems. b) To create strategic partnerships with various Industries, National and International organizations working towards promoting innovation. c) To develop various skills among students required for successful implementation of ideas. d) To develop entrepreneurs in the North Eastern region of India. 

Center for International Relations

The Center for International Relations at NIT Meghalaya was established in 2017. The center is a comprehensive unit committed to developing, promoting and implementing international education initiatives for our students, faculty members and staff members. The center also takes care of admission of international students through various agencies like ICCR, Study-in-India, DASA etc. There are 25 international students currently studying undergraduate and postgraduate program(s) in various departments of NIT Meghalaya, and 10 international students graduated from NIT Meghalaya.

Design Innovation Center

Design Innovation Center is conceptualized to promote, nurture and advance the culture of design innovation in the country leading to significant contributions and breakthroughs impacting quality of human life. Design-focused innovation & creativity, culture of innovation & creative problem solving, knowledge sharing and collaboration among stake holders. Center allows culture of innovation and creative problem solving, knowledge sharing among stake holders Academia-social interaction Academia-industry interaction, classroom projects to market/people.

Student Life at Institute

The students’ council under Student Activity Center (SAC) organizes two festivals every year:

·             Annual Cultural Festival (SHISHIR) in the spring semester

·             Annual Technical Festival (COGNITIA) in the autumn semester

In addition, (i) SPIC MACKAY performances are being organized in the institute premises; (ii) various cultural events and exchange programs are also organized with the paired Institutes with NIT Meghalaya under Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat (EBSB) mission of GoI.

The sports & games competitions are spread throughout the year. Students of the Institute participate in national level inter institutional sports and cultural activities.

Students can register for NSS and NCC activities. 

Students reside in institute hostels in the city. Hostels are equipped with Gym and other sports facilities though these are limited in nature.

Financial Assistance

As per MHRD Notification F.No.33-4/2014 - TS.III dated 24th June, 2016. 

(a) The SC/ST/PH students shall get complete tuition fee waiver.

(b) The most economically backward students (whose family income is less than Rs. 1.00 lakh per annum) shall get full remission of the tuition fee.

(c) The other economically backward students (whose family income is between Rs.1.00 lakh to Rs. 5.00 lakh per annum) shall get remission of 2/3rd of the tuition fee.

Training & Placement

Equipped with all the requisite state-of-the-art amenities, the Center for Career Development carries out the following key activities:

1. Liaising with leading domestic and international corporate firms, industrial establishments of repute, the center conducts recruitment drives to facilitate the placement of the final year students.

2. Assisting the students in securing internships to widen their exposure and knowledge domain.

3. Conducting Employability Assessment Tests, Employability Skills Training program and GATE Training program to improve the soft/technical skill sets of the students.

4. Conducting industry oriented, as well as career related seminars/webinars to upskill the students and update them with the emerging trends and technologies.

 The highlights of the placement session of the B.Tech 2023 pass out batch are as follows:

Industry And Alumni Relations

For the majority of the students Industry Internships are arranged by Placement Cell. Industry experts are invited to deliver talks and interact with the students and the faculty. The institute has also vibrant alumni association. In this direction, National Institute of Technology Meghalaya Alumni Association (NITMAA) was formed in 2015.The primary goal of this association is to act as a bridge between the past and present of NIT Meghalaya. The purpose of an association is to provide a forum to establish a link between the alumni, staff and students of the institute. It helps to participate in activities that would contribute to the general development of the institute and to help alumni with their technical problems, to introduce prizes and scholarships and render financial aid to deserving students of the institute and contribute towards the welfare of the alumni.

Location and Accessibility

The Institute is presently located at Bijni Complex of Laitumkhrah locality in the Shillong city.

Shillong is a hill station in the northeastern part of India and the capital of Meghalaya, which means "The Abode of Clouds".

The weather conditions in Shillong are typically pleasant, pollution-free.

The headquarters of various central government organizations such as Power Grid Corporation of India Limited, Eastern Command of the Indian Air Force, North East Council, North East Electric Power Corporation, North Eastern Region Power Committee are located in Shillong.

The construction of the Institute permanent campus is in progress at Cherrapunjee which is world renowned place.

Shillong is well connected by-

Road :  A 4 Lane National Highway (NH40) connects Shillong and Guwahati. The distance is about 100 km.

Train :  The nearest railway station is Guwahati. The affordable road transport services is available from Guwahati railway station to Shillong city.
