About the Institute

National Institute of Technology Puducherry (NITPy), an Institution of National Importance nestled in the scenes of Karaikal, a costal enclave in the basin of river Kaveri is one among the ten new NIT’s sanctioned by the Government of India under the 11th Five-year plan vide order No. F-23-13/2009-TS dated 30th October, 2009 by an act of parliament (NIT act 2007). It is situated in the Union Territory of Puducherry.

Notwithstanding the tender age, NITPy is committed to produce effective and responsible technocrats who have the ability to serve the nation on its journey to growth and prosperity. In this process, students have been admitted from the academic year 2010-11 onwards through JEE Mains with 50% of seats reserved for the candidates having residence/native at Union Territories of Puducherry and Andaman & Nicobar. The remaining 50% of seats are filled on all India basis.

About 20% admissions (additional) are open to the students from abroad for admission through DASA, ICCR and Study in India (SII) schemes under Ministry of Education and also seats are allotted to the scheme under Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).

The Institution is at a constant attempt of making endeavours to scale new heights by developing a synergy between teaching, research, and consulting /training activities.

The Institute provides keen guidance in terms of fundamental knowledge and advanced technologies, motivation for co-curricular and extra-curricular activities to sculpt the bright minds into professionally balanced individuals, capable enough to take up challenges of nature, society and the marketplace.

Presently, 73 teaching staffs along with 89 non-teaching staffs on regular basis are employed for an overall strength of 1547 students, including 278 research scholars and the students are exposed to the most modern and up-to-date curriculum and contemporary developments in various disciplines of engineering, in addition to scientific and engineering skills, the institute provides scope to get exposure for team work on experiments, projects presentation & communication skills and active participation in all extracurricular activities.

Since necessity is the mother of inventions, the students are encouraged to participate in every corner of need and to take the chaos of early years as an opportunity to grow with self-determination and innovation. To mention, the institute website and many laboratory experiments were designed and fabricated by them.

National Institute of Technology Puducherry (NITPy) is energetically involved in different areas of research and offers consultancy services to industry to bridge the gap between industry and academia. 

The research and consultancy activities are actively taken up by the faculty members of the Institute and have been gaining momentum in the recent past. These activities help the faculty members to apply the concepts to practical problems and thereby gain the practical knowledge and share their gained knowledge effectively with the students. 

The research projects investigated by the faculty and sponsored by different government funding agencies and industry research collaborations have helped the Institute in developing state of the art facilities. The faculty of the Institute have bagged research project funding worth of nearly 100 Million Indian Rupees

·      In addition, Ph.D. degree programs are offered in Science and Humanities, Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry.

·       Every programme has well defined regulation, curriculum structure and syllabus. The flexible curriculum of B.Tech. and M. Tech. degree programmes has balanced number of courses under different components such as Basic science and humanities, Engineering sciences, professional core, professional electives, Global electives, practical, project work, Industrial training/internship and NSS/NCC/NSO training. The courses are fully autonomous.

·    The assessment procedure of each course consists of continuous assessments and final assessment with relative grading system.

·     The effectiveness of teaching-learning process and performance of students are analyzed by the class committee/Course Review Committee consisting a senior faculty of the department as chairperson, and course teachers and student representatives as members.

The change of branch from the admitted one is not permitted. However the students may choose the Major or Minor courses of other branches by satisfying the requirements.

Facilities

The National Institute of Technology Puducherry is situated in Karaikal with greenery environment and its campus spreads over an astounding 256 acres of land with secure Compound and a perimeter pathway around the boundaries of the Institute. The following are the major facilities of the institute.

The Institute boasts a Science Block with well-established Laboratories and class rooms. The laboratories are equipped with latest equipment.

The administrative block of the institute houses the offices of the Director, Registrar, Deans and major activities. It also houses 10 laboratories and 8 class rooms.

A laboratory block is available in the institute which accommodates some of the laboratories of Civil, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering.

In addition to the above, a Guest house, Canteen, 2-Nos of Boys Hostel, a Girls Hostel and Faculty quarters are functioning with all facilities and good ambience

All blocks are enabled with Wi-Fi facilities. All buildings are fitted with lifts and the facilities for Physically disabled.

Medical centre, branch of State Bank of India, ATM facilities are available inside the campus.

The facilities for sports activities, music and cultural activities, and NCC are available.

The construction of Engineering block and sports complex of international standards are in progress. Similarly, the construction of extension of Girls Hostel, Boys Hostel-III, Faculty and staff quarters are also in progress.

The laboratories of each department are equipped with modernized equipment/tools/software packages to carry out the fundamental experiments, advanced project work and research activities. The establishment of Centres of Excellence is in progress.

The institute signed MoUs with institutions and industries of repute in India and abroad for training, internship, placement, and project and research work. Specifically the institute signed MoU with Léonard de Vinci, Courbevoie, France for student exchange programme and with IIT Madras for internship and direct Ph.D admission.

Financial Assistance

Fee Remissions are given as per the Government norms. Eligible students can apply for the scholarship as per the guidelines laid out by the scheme.

Training & Placement

The Training and Placement Cell of NITPy has emerged as a favorite destination for many organizations /Multi-national companies to recruit the fresh talents nurtured in this institution. The institution showcased a good placement profile from the beginning. The major objectives of the training and placement cell are as follows:

To provide adequate training to students making them eligible to efficiently face placement process.

To provide an active interface between potential employers and the students, i.e. establishing an active placement       system.

The training and placement cell strives to develop relations with recruiters in every field, ensuring wide choice in the student’s career opportunities which serves as a guarantee to his/her satisfaction, both with the company and the cell.

A wide range of programs are also conducted, that guide and propel the students in the direction of a successful placement.

Employability enhancement activities are conducted which include: Technical classes GATE exam preparation, Mock aptitude tests (regularly), Mock group discussions, interviews, Technical skill enrichment programs etc

Industrial Relations

Internship, Industrial visits and In-plant training are part of the Curricular and co-curricular activities. Students are encouraged to visit industries. T& P Cell and respective department are helping the students in this aspect. Institute also have signed MoU with industries and reputed academic institutions. Also, National Institute of Technology Puducherry (NITPy) is energetically involved in different areas of research and offers consultancy services to industry to bridge the gap between industry and academia.

 Alumni Relations

Alumni association is registered and functioning.

Since the 1st batch of Alumni which started in 2014, the prestigious National Institute of Technology Puducherry, has grown manifolds by producing some of the finest professionals in the nation in a myriad of fields. The NIT Puducherry Alumni Association aims at bringing together all its current and former students by giving them a platform to interact with the Alma Mater.

Know Your Alumni (KYA) is an initiative from the collaboration of NITPY Alumni Association, Placement cell, Student welfare and various other clubs of NITPY to create a connectivity between alumni and students through

Recreational/Extra Curricular activities

In addition to academic activities, NITPy supports various extracurricular activities to enrich skills and bring the talents of the students beyond academics. The students are encouraged to participate various co-curricular and extra-curricular meets and events across the country and world. The On duty will be provided to them as per the regulation.

The Cultural Committee organizes “LE’CIEL” an intercollegiate cultural festival every year

“GYANITH” an intercollegiate technical festival is being conducted every year where the students across the country will assemble, interact, share, gain knowledge in the various fields of Engineering and Technology.

Annual sports meet, celebration of international yoga day and Celebration of Fit India Movement are annually held.

Annual leadership Training Camp and conduct of ‘B’ and ‘C’ certificate examination for NCC cadets are also being conducted.

The students of NITPY share and enhance their knowledge through various clubs and committees. To name a  few of them;

FOSS Club

Free open source software society is formed to support and promote usage of open source application, rather than accustomed to stereotyped usage of proprietary software.

The society provides a platform to explore, learn, develop and share the open source culture. It meets every fortnight, and exchanges the knowledge through discussions, lecture and practical sessions.

Literary Club

Aimed at fostering and developing the verbal skills of the students, the literary club apart from publishing its annual magazine, IGNITE: the voice of NITPY, conducts various events including debates, group discussions and competitions as such to promote a healthy growth of vocational skills.

Innovation club

Comprises of associations like robotics, electrical, electronics, mechanical, computer enthusiast group and is widely responsible for inspiring the students and aids them by providing a platform for research in innovative and thrust areas of engineering and technology.

 Sports Club

Apart from being the location for the inter-NIT tournament annually, the sports day: a culminating day of varied sports activities, is also held along with the students participating in various national and state level competitions and bagging top positions and awards.

Cultural Club

An amalgamation of cultural activities are organized and conducted by the cultural club at NITPY annually with an aim to showcase the rich culture brought forward in NITPY and importance given to traditional values.

Rotaract Club

The students of NITPY have formed a ROTARACT club, which works for the welfare of the society teaching children about hygiene and career prospects.

Professional Societies

The student chapters of Professional societies like IEEE, IE(I) and ISTE are functioning in the institute and various technical and non-technical activities are conducted through these chapters

In addition to the above, Art and Craft club, Design club, Music club, Dance club, Women’s Cell, Tamil Mandram, Photography Club, Esports club and Ragasvarupam Indian Performing Arts Club are functioning

Location

National Institute of Technology Puducherry (NITPY) is situated in Karaikal. NITPY is located on the National Highway NH32 at about 58 km from Chidambaram towards South. The Institute is located about 8.5 km from Karaikal Bus stand on the Nagapattinam to Chennai Highway (NH 32). Karaikal Railway Station is about 11 km from the NITPY. The simplest and most economical way to reach NITPY is Bus Routes from Puducherry and Chennai pass through the Institute (to stop at Thiruvettakudy Arch) to reach Karaikal Bus Stand.
