A BRIEF PROFILE OF NIT JAMSHEDPUR
National Institute of Technology Jamshedpur is an Institution of National Importance that came into existence by an Act of Parliament (Act 29 of 2007) namely, the National Institutes of Technology Act, 2007, which received the assent of the President of India on the 5th of June 2007. This was formerly known as Regional Institute of Technology (RIT) Jamshedpur and was established on 15th August 1960 with the aim of nurturing young engineers for the economic growth of the Nation. NIT Jamshedpur is situated in the western part of the city of Jamshedpur. The flowing river Kharkai and picturesque backdrop of low hills on one side, and large tracts of forest on the other side, make the 341.30 acres of rolling campus an ideal place for higher learning and research. NIT Jamshedpur has well-qualified faculty and dedicated supporting staff. The institute offers B. Tech, M. Tech, M.C.A., and M.Sc. degrees in various disciplines of Engineering, Sciences, and Humanities, in addition to Ph.D. degrees in all disciplines.

The institute is working to set mission targets to build a conducive environment for learning and creativity and train students to become technically competent professionals and socially responsible citizens and develop innovative products and technologies for the betterment of society.
NIT Jamshedpur is committed to academic excellence and good governance. Recently, NIT Jamshedpur has been ranked 90th in NIRF 2022 in an engineering discipline and ARIIA 2020 Rank band: ‘B’ (Rank between 25th to 50th) under Publicly Funded Institutions bands for Subcategories “Institute of National Importance, Central Universities & CFTIs.” At present, there are 175 faculty members on a regular scale-out of which 95% are holding Ph.D. degrees from various premier institutes across the country and abroad. A total of 3500 UG & PG, DASA (international) students, and more than 400 research scholars are enrolled in the institute. A total of 40 sponsored research projects sanctioned from BRNS, DST, NID, SERB, etc., are underway in different disciplines of the institute.

At present, a total amount of 7.00 Crores was granted to NIT Jamshedpur from various sponsoring agencies. In addition, Institute received a total amount of 30 Lakhs for organizing GIAN Courses, ATAL projects, Karyashala, other workshops and conferences.
NIT Jamshedpur has received grant-in-aid-GEN (E-SDP) scheme-12 for the Entrepreneurship and Skill Development Program (E-SDP) scheme under the plan head promotional services institutional and programs for organizing advanced MDP programs during academic year 2022-23. NIT Jamshedpur has recently taken an MOU with Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC), Kolkata to explore a pilot project on conversion of waste to energy, food/bio-waste to energy, preparation of fuel pellets from dry leaves/wooden branches, etc., and also its joint implementation at one of the DVC field stations. NIT Jamshedpur has been recognized as a regional center of north-eastern states under Unnat Bharat Abhiyan. NIT Jamshedpur is also recognized as a Host Institute for implementation of the Incubation component under MSME Innovative Scheme for the Ministry of Micro, Small, Medium Enterprises (MSME), New Delhi.
NIT Jamshedpur has submitted a proposal for an amount of Rupees 60 Crores to be a part of cluster organization along with other NITs and Universities under the scheme sophisticated analytical and technical help institutes (SATHI) of the Department of Science & Technology, Govt. of India. At present, the proposal is under consideration by the Ministry of Science & Technology, Govt. of India.
NIT Jamshedpur has received an administrative approval for an amount of 96 Lakhs budget for five years for the project titled “Design and development of system on Chip based next generation IoT system for Industry 4.0 with functional safety and security features under Chips to startup program of Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology, New Delhi. Under this project, NIT Jamshedpur collaborate with NIT Rourkela (Lead Agency), IIEST Shibpur, NIT Raipur and NIT Jalandhar.
NIT Jamshedpur is extending technical expertise to the public, private, and other NGO organizations on regular basis under consultancy services. NIT Jamshedpur has an ongoing student chapter of the Indian Ceramic Society (ICS), Kolkata through which students hone their skill towards materials research at national level. Further, the institute has signed MoUs with CSIR-National Metallurgical Laboratory, Jamshedpur, CSIR-Central Glass & Ceramic Research Institute, Kolkata, RSB group International, Advance Tech India Pvt. Ltd. Chandigarh, Madan Mohan Malviya University of Technology, Gorakhpur, National Institute of Technical Teacher’s Training and Research, Kolkata, National Coordinating Institute Unnat Bharat Abhiyan, I.I.T. Delhi, Ritsumeikan University, Kyoto, Japan,. The institute is planning more MoUs with other premier Institutions, and research organizations in India and abroad.
At present NIT Jamshedpur is identified as a Host Institute for implementation of the Incubation component under MSME Innovative Scheme for the Ministry of Micro, Small, Medium Enterprises (MSME), New Delhi. Advanced Entrepreneurship and Skill Development Program (E-SDP) and Advanced Management Development Program (MDP) was conducted by the institute with this recognition. NIT Jamshedpur has recently opened a student chapter of the Indian Ceramic Society (ICS), Kolkata through which students hone their skill towards materials research at national level.
NIT Jamshedpur has strong alumni base having its registered NITJA association spread throughout India and abroad. Our alumnus takes keen interest in institute’s development through online meeting arranged by our Alumni cell at frequent intervals. Institute not only arranged the Alumni meet every year but also invite them to address students and motivate them for bigger assignments like entrepreneurship, start-ups, skill developments etc. Financial supports in the form of facility creation for the benefit of the students are also received from them time to time.
The Institute is performing remarkably well on the Research and Development front also. Our faculty members have published a large number of research papers in peer-reviewed reputed journals with impressive citations. Our faculty members have also got patents filed and published. Recently, 6 students groups were granted 1.0 Lakh each for their innovative idea projects to pursue in the institute central research centre under the project “learning by doing”. The Institute has been achieving nearly 100% placements for its students year after year. We have Institute Innovative Council (IIC) and Entrepreneurship Cell (E-cell) established with a strong team of more than sixty students to inculcate the spirit of innovation and entrepreneurship in students of NIT Jamshedpur which network with renowned personalities and incubators.
