This Institute was established in 1961 as one of the RECs for imparting technical education in Civil, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering. In the year 1983-84 the Under Graduate Programmes in Electronics Engineering was introduced and in the year 1988-89 the UG Programmes in Computer Engineering and Production Engineering was started. In the year 1995-96, UG Programme in Chemical Engineering was introduced. 

From the academic year 2023-24, the Institute is going to start a new UG programme in Artificial Intelligence. The Institute is going to start Five Years Dual Degree Program (B.Tech.+MBA) for the students admitted from the academic year 2023-24. The option to select dule degree program will be available to the students at the end of 3rd year of B.Tech. programme.

There are total 12 departments; Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Humanities & Social Sciences and Management Studies. 

Also, Five Year Integrated M.Sc. Programme in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics were started with effect from the year 2007-2008. In exercise of the powers conferred by section 3 of the University Grants Commission (UGC) Act, 1956, the Central Government on the advice of the University Grants Commission, has declared the Sardar Vallabhbhai Regional College of Engineering & Technology (SVREC), Surat to Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology (SVNIT), Surat with a status of “Deemed University” with effect from ^h December  4, 2002. The Institute has been granted the status of ‘Institute of National Importance’ w.e.f. Aug. 15, 2007.  The Institute offers Seven UG Programmes including new programme of Artificial Intelligence, Twenty one PG Programmes and Three M.Sc. Five Years Integrated Programme including doctoral programme in all above branches.

a) Institute Fee:

Fee Structure for B.Tech. Students who joined the Institute in the Academic Year 2023-24

#        If a student avail single occupancy in Hostel, additional payment of Rs. 4500/- will be included in the Hostel Fee Structure from Academic Year 2023-24.

Note:   The SC/ST/PwD students shall get complete tuition fee waiver as per MHRD letter: F.No.33-4/2014-TS III dated 24/06/2016 & 02/07/2016.

            The most economically backwards students (whose family income is less than Rs. 1.00 lakh per annum) shall get full remission of the tuition fee. The other economically backward students (whose family income is between Rs. 1.00 lakh to Rs. 5.00 lakhs per annum) shall get remission of 2/3^rd of the tuition fee as per MHRD letter: F.No.33-4/2014-TS III dated 24/06/2016 & 02/07/2016.

The Institute offers Seven UG Programmes namely Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics & Communication Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Chemical Engineering and Artificial Intelligence. Institute also offers B.Tech. students to opt for Minor Degree in all above discipline of his/her choice based on CGPA. 

The Institute is going to start Five Years Dual Degree Program (B.Tech.+MBA) for the students admitted from the academic year 2023-24. The option to select dule degree program will be available to the students at the end of 3rd year of B.Tech. programme.

Institute also offers 5 years Integrated M.Sc. Programmes in Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics. Institute also offers Twenty One Post Graduate Programmes in Chemical Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Structural Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Transportation Engineering and Planning, Urban Planning, Water Resource Engineering, Construction Technology and Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Information Security & Privacy, Data Science, Power Systems, Power Electronics & Electrical Drive, Instrumentation and Control, Communication System, VLSI & Embedded Systems, Thermal System Design, Manufacturing Engineering, Turbomachines, Mechanical Engineering and CAD-CAM including Doctoral programme in respective departments.

Accreditation Status: The B.Tech Programmes in Civil Engineering and Mechanical Engineering are accredited up to June 30, 2022 and B.Tech Programmes in Chemical Engineering are accredited up to June 30, 2021 by the National Board of Accreditation, New Delhi.

The accreditation of six B.Tech Programmes and eleven PG Programmes is under process.

The institute has implemented various schemes of scholarship and financial assistance to the students in the form of National Merit Scholarship, Merit Scholarship, Post-Merit Scholarship, Merit-cum-Means Scholarship, Scholarships for Other Backward Classes and Scholarships for Physically Handicapped students as sanctioned by the concerned organizations/governments. Institute awards Dr. A.P. Verma Scholarship in Mathematics, Mr. Nishith Vijay Sampat Merit based scholarship to the topper in Mechanical Engineering, Shri Rajanikumar Majumadar Scholarship to the students who secure highest CGPA at the end of First Year and having yearly income less than Rs.2.5 lakh. The same student will continue to get this scholarship until the end of the study, provided the student clears all the semesters successfully. 

Institute has full-fledged Training & Placement Section (T&P) under the Professor In-charge Training & Placemat. It helps the student’s community to get the proper placement in various public and private sector organizations by arranging the campus interviews. The placement of final year students starts at the beginning of the academic year. Further, to strengthen the Industry-Institute interaction, T & P section encourages the companies for an internship to B. Tech. 3^rd year students (maximum 8 weeks in summer vacation) and to M. Tech. students (maximum 1 year) in their 2^nd year as a dissertation work.

The institute is having its alumni association, which takes an active interest in the growth of the institute. The institute has signed several MoUs with industries such as Reliance, L&T, Essar, Altair, Patni and various Technical Institutions and, Universities in India and abroad. The institute is a recognized centre for Environmental Audit and a Nodal Centre for Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadk Yojna.

The SVNIT Surat is having wide network of its alumni across the globe. The alumni of the institute are placed at the high rank in the government, semi-government and private institutions serving the country whole heartedly. The networking of students with alumni be carried out through the office of Dean (Alumni and Resources Generation) and office SVNIT Surat Alumni Association situated within the campus of the institute. The networking of the SVNIT Surat Alumni is through Alma Connect. The alumni of institute support the various academic, research, sports and placement activities of the institute apart from financially helping the needy students. The alumni association organizes the annual convention of alumni of institute every year which is one of the most awaited events. 

Apart from academics, the institute takes due care of the overall development of students through extracurricular activities like “KASHISH” the welcome program for first-year students. A three-day cultural event “SPARSH” is one of the most cherished activities of the students. A technical event like “MINDBEND” along with activities of various student chapters/clubs such as Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), Centre for Humanity Resource  Development (CHRD), Chemical Engineering Society (CHES), Civil Engineering Society (CES), Cutting Edge Visionaries (CEV), DRISHTI, Electrical Engineering Society (EES), Indian Institute of Welding (IIW), Indian Institution of Industrial Engineering (IIIE), Indian Society for Technical Education Society (ISTE), Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), Institution of Engineers (IE), Literary Affairs Committee (LAC), NIRVANA- a programme of social engineering, RENESA, Society for Cultivation of Science & Humanities (SCOSH), Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), SPIC-MACAY (Society for the Promotion of Indian Classical Music And Culture Amongst Youth), The Institution of Electronics & Telecommunication Engineers (IETE) etc. are organized throughout a year to keep a student involved in co-curricular activities.
