The institute has excellent testing and consultancy facilities, which contribute to revenue generation.

This institute was amongst the first six Regional Engineering Colleges established in 1960 by Government of India, as a part of the national integration initiative. In the year 2002, along with the another Regional Engineering College, this college was given the status of Deemed University and was converted into National Institute of Technology with full autonomy and was brought under the umbrella of MHRD, Govt. of India. Subsequently, VNIT has been recognized as an Institute of National Importance though an Act of Parliament, namely, National Institute of Technology Act, 2007 (Act 29 of 2007).

VNIT has made a very rapid growth in the recent past in terms of starting new academic programs, revision of academic curriculum, development of laboratories and infrastructure. In the last five years, the institute has started one new B. Tech. program, five new M. Tech. programs, and initiated fellowship for full time Ph.D. program. The under-graduate and post-graduate programs have been made credit based and more number of electives are offered to the students. VNIT has formed seven member core committee to plan implementation of NEP at VNIT. As a first step to it an interdisciplinary course M.Tech in “Engineering Applied to Medical Sciences” has been launched.

Under the TEQIP program which is funded though World Bank finances, the institute has spent Rs. 10 crore on new infrastructure which includes library building, mega-mess, Class room complex, New Academic Building, New Hostels and New Health Center Building. 1MW solar power plant in VNIT campus is installed which led to savings of approximately 1 crore on the annual electricity bill and cut its carbon footprints by 808 tons per annum. Rooftop solar panels are installed on 14 buildings based over 200 acre lush green campus.

VNIT has established Center of Excellence (CoE) in collaboration with Siemens India and MTC Chennai in the domain of Industry 4.0 and Digitization. VNIT has signed MOU with ISRO to set up space Technology Incubation Centre (STIC) at VNIT Nagpur. Institute has also signed MoU with many renowned Educational Institutes, Research Institutes and Industries on National and International level.

Industry And Alumni Relations

Industry Institute Interaction (III) Cell

The Institute has very dynamic Industry Institute Interaction Cell since 1989. The academic departments have been carrying out various activities envisaged under the III independently and with support from the III Cell, as deemed necessary. The objectives of the Industry Institute Interaction Cell are mainly -

Ø To evolve educational programs which are consistent with the broad requirements of the industry and which can give rise to engineering personnel capable of coping-up with the accelerating pace of technological development.

Ø  To create adequate facilities for updating the knowledge of professional engineers and technologists to meet the growth and developmental needs of the industry

Ø  To coordinate the research and developmental activities of the two systems

Ø In light of the liberal economic and industrial policy recently adopted by the Govt. of India, the industrial scenario is fast changing. Industries are compelled to export a part of their production and compete with multinationals for the internal market. The emphasis has shifted to quality products and well-trained manpower to produce such products. There has been a greater need for industries to depend on technical institutions for R&D and for the supply of highly qualified and skilled manpower. Retraining of the workforce has become a major activity for all industries. There is, thus a good opportunity for the institute to interact with industries for mutual benefits.

Ø The Industry-Institute Interaction would accrue mutual benefits when a symbiotic relationship is developed between the two systems. The ultimate aim of this relationship will be the creation of confidence in the industry by the Institute which would result in industries involving voluntarily the Institute at various stages of its development.

Ø Under the flagship of III Cell, Institute has made considerable progress in regard to signing an MoU with various organizations in India and abroad. Organizations with whom MoU is signed in the last two years include the National Disaster Management Authority (New Delhi), All India Institute of Medical Sciences (Nagpur), Persistent Systems Ltd. (Nagpur), Windsun Renewable Pvt. Ltd. (Nagpur), Minex Metallurgical Co. Ltd.( Mumbai), Fireblaze Technologies Pvt. Ltd.( Nagpur), IC Electricals Co. Pvt. Ltd. (Haridwar), Purti Enterprises Pvt. Ltd. (Nagpur), Agile Connect Pvt. Ltd. (Nagpur), Research for Resurgence Foundation (Nagpur), YASKAWA India Pvt. Ltd.( Bangalore), Government College of Engineering (Jalgaon), IIIT -Nagpur, etc.

Ø III Cell arranges lectures from Industry Experts for the students. An effort is taken to form at least 20% of the core course curriculum covered by Industry experts. III Cell also arranges student internships in various industries.

_Alumni Association

Ø Institute has a strong Alumni association and has very distinguished alumni working in various Government and Non-Government sectors. The mission of the VNIT Alumni Association (VNITAA), Nagpur is to bring all alumni under a common umbrella for the purpose of professional networking, intellectual engagement, fostering fellowship, and building a bridge between alumni and current students.

Ø Through mentoring activities, industry events, awards, and scholarships and promoting discussion of issues relevant to our profession, alumni aim to help VNIT to produce Engineers and Architects of the highest caliber while creating a vibrant professional culture capable of addressing the technological needs of the global society.

Ø Alumni Association has chapters in various cities/states in India viz New Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Chennai, Bengaluru, Gujrat & also in the USA
