About the Institute

_Brief Information about Institute

_Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT) is one of the 31 National Institutes of Technology in India. Since its inception, the institute has experienced significant growth and has established itself as a premier institution for technical education. Currently, VNIT hosts approximately 3,750 undergraduate students, 900 postgraduate students, and 550 Ph.D. scholars. The institute offers 14 undergraduate programs (Thirteen B.Tech and one B.Arch) and 26 postgraduate programs (23 M.Tech and 03 M.Sc). Undergraduate admissions are conducted through JEE, postgraduate M.Tech admissions through GATE, and M.Sc. admissions through JAM. VNIT also offers Ph.D. programs across various disciplines in engineering and science. The institute is actively engaged in a wide range of research and development (R&D) activities, supported by government and private funding agencies. In addition, VNIT provides excellent testing and consultancy services, which contribute significantly to its revenue generation.

_Established in 1960, VNIT was among the first six Regional Engineering Colleges set up by the Government of India as part of a national integration initiative. In 2002, along with another Regional Engineering College, it was granted Deemed University status and transformed into a National Institute of Technology with full academic and administrative autonomy under the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India. Subsequently, VNIT was designated as an Institute of National Importance through the National Institutes of Technology Act, 2007 (Act 29 of 2007), passed by the Parliament of India.

_VNIT has witnessed rapid growth in recent years through the introduction of new academic programs, revision of curricula, and significant development of laboratories and infrastructure. Undergraduate and postgraduate programs have been transitioned to a credit-based system, with an increased offering of electives for students, in alignment with NEP guidelines. As a first step to it an interdisciplinary course M.Tech in “Engineering Applied to Medical Sciences” has been launched.

_ Under the TEQIP program, funded through World Bank assistance, the institute has invested ₹10 crore in new infrastructure, including a library building, mega-mess, classroom complex, new academic building, hostels, and a health center. A 1 MW solar power plant has been installed on campus, resulting in annual savings of approximately ₹1 crore in electricity costs and reducing the institute’s carbon footprint by 808 tons per year. Additionally, rooftop solar panels have been installed on 14 buildings across the 215 acre lush green campus.

_VNIT is actively engaged in initiatives for societal benefit and welfare. During the COVID-19 pandemic, its faculty and staff worked diligently on developing a UV sanitization chamber, the 'Sahayak' robot for hospital use, a two-way ventilator splitter, and also contributed by distributing medical equipment, face shields, and touch-free hand sanitizers.

_VNIT has established a Centre of Excellence (CoE) in collaboration with Siemens India and MTC Chennai, focusing on Industry 4.0 and digitalization. The institute has also signed an MoU with ISRO to set up a Space Technology Incubation Centre (STIC) at VNIT Nagpur. In addition, VNIT has entered into MoUs with following renowned educational institutions, research organizations, and industries at both national and international levels.

·_         _INTERNSHIPS

_Companies offer Summer Internships to B.Tech 2nd year, 3rd year and M.Tech 1st year students. Summer internships offer an opportunity to students to work in a professional space, on the technologies they are learning on campus. The provision of a 6-month / semester-long internship is applicable to pre-final year students. This exposure helps them when they decide to join the industry as working professionals. During the academic year 2024-25, more than 105 companies offered Internship/Training. These included companies like D.E. Shaw, Google, Goldman Sachs, FiBE, VISA, John Deere, JP Morgan Chase, HILTI, Johnson & Johnson, ITC, IOCL, NMRCL, GAIL,  RINL, BARC, _ONGC, RCFL, Defence Laboratory-DRDO, DMRL, ISRO-NRSC Lab,  IITs (BHU, Delhi, Hyderabad, Roorkee, Indore, Mandi) and many more. The internships are a great way for companies to attract good students and monitor them during their tenure. Based on their performance of the intern, the companies extend a Pre-Placement offer (PPO) to the interns and inform the T & P department about their decision.

·_         _Note:

Ø_  _B.Tech students, upon completion of their 3rd year, can pursue a summer internship for 8-10 weeks.

Ø_  _M.Tech students have the provision to pursue a year-long internship during their final year of the M.Tech programme.

Industry And Alumni Relations

_ _Industry and Alumni Relations

_Industry Institute Interaction (III) Cell

_The Institute has very dynamic Industry Institute Interaction Cell since 1989. The academic departments have been carrying out various activities envisaged under the III independently and with support from the III Cell, as deemed necessary. The objectives of the Industry Institute Interaction Cell are mainly -

_Ø To evolve educational programs which are consistent with the broad requirements of the industry and which can give rise to engineering personnel capable of keeping up with the accelerating pace of technological development.

_Ø To create adequate facilities for updating the knowledge of professional engineers and technologists to meet the growth and developmental needs of the industry

_Ø To coordinate the research and developmental activities of the two systems

_Ø In light of the liberal economic and industrial policy recently adopted by the Govt. of India, the industrial scenario is fast changing. Industries are compelled to export a part of their production and compete with multinationals for the internal market. The emphasis has shifted to quality products and well-trained manpower to produce such products. There has been a greater need for industries to depend on technical institutions for R&D and for the supply of highly qualified and skilled manpower. Retraining of the workforce has become a major activity for all industries. There is, thus a good opportunity for the institute to interact with industries for mutual benefits.

_Ø The Industry-Institute Interaction would accrue mutual benefits when a symbiotic relationship is developed between the two systems. The ultimate aim of this relationship will be the creation of confidence in the industry by the Institute, which would result in industries voluntarily involving the Institute at various stages of their development.

_Ø Under the flagship of III Cell, the Institute has made considerable progress regarding signing an MoU with various organizations in India and abroad. Organizations with whom MoU is signed in the last two years include the National Disaster Management Authority (New Delhi), All India Institute of Medical Sciences (Nagpur), Persistent Systems Ltd. (Nagpur), Windsun Renewable Pvt. Ltd. (Nagpur), Minex Metallurgical Co. Ltd.( Mumbai), Fireblaze Technologies Pvt. Ltd.( Nagpur), IC Electricals Co. Pvt. Ltd. (Haridwar), Purti Enterprises Pvt. Ltd. (Nagpur), Agile Connect Pvt. Ltd. (Nagpur), Research for Resurgence Foundation (Nagpur), YASKAWA India Pvt. Ltd.( Bangalore), Government College of Engineering (Jalgaon), IIIT -Nagpur, etc.

_Ø III Cell arranges lectures from Industry Experts for the students. An effort is taken to form at least 20% of the core course curriculum covered by Industry experts. III Cell also arranges student internships in various industries.

_Alumni

_Ø The Institute has a strong Alumni network spread across the globe. At the institute level, a team under the Dean (International Affairs & Alumni) and Associate Dean (Alumni) helps them stay connected with their alma mater

_The alumni are connected with each other through an association of alumni VNITAA (Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology Alumni Association), which provides an interactive networking platform for the alumni of VNIT to connect with each other,  thus forging and reinforcing relationships formed in their student years at VNIT ..

_ _The VNITAA currently has 11 chapters at the national level as well as UK, Europe, Singapore, UAE, Australia, Qatar, Canada and US
