About the Institute

Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur (IIEST, Shibpur) has a more than 160 years long and rich history.  It started its journey in 1856 as Calcutta Civil Engineering College and emerged as a premier engineering college in pre-independence India.  It was renamed as Bengal Engineering College, Shibpur in 1920.  The College received the status of a Deemed University in 1993 and was subsequently transformed to Bengal Engineering and Science University, Shibpur in 2004.  The institute has been upgraded to an Institute of National Importance by the amendment of the NITSER Act of the Parliament in 2014 and renamed as Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur.  The Institute has fifteen departments of Engineering, Architecture, Science, and Humanities & Social Science disciplines.  In addition, it has five Schools and one Centre dedicated for imparting education and conducting research in interdisciplinary fields.

B.TECH. / B.ARCH. PROGRAMS

The Institute offers Full Time Four-Year B.Tech. Courses in the following nine disciplines with an option to apply for dual degree courses extending over 10 semesters after successful completion of the sixth semester in the B.Tech. course as per the terms and conditions specified by the institute. After completion of the tenth-semester dual degree course, the student will receive both B.Tech. and M.Tech. Degrees.

Rules For Change Branch

Change of the branch is a privilege and not a right. Candidates admitted through JEE (Main) to B. Tech. programs (other than B. Arch students) only are eligible to be considered for a change of branch after the second semester.

Eligibility

a) The student must have completed all the credits prescribed in the first two semesters of the course, in his/her first attempt.

b) The student must have obtained a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) not lower than 8.0at the end of the Second Semester.

c) The student has successfully completed the NCC/ NSS etc., requirements.

d) No disciplinary action was taken against the student during the first two semesters.

Faculty

The Institute offers courses in (i) Engineering, Technology, and Architecture; (ii) Basic and Applied Sciences, and (iii) Social Sciences and Management Sciences.

The total number of regular faculty members (Professor, Associate Professor, and Assistant Professor) on employment is 200.  More than 50 senior and eminent professors (retired) are actively participating in the teaching and research programs of the Institute as Contractual, Temporary Faculty, Visiting Faculty, and different other honorary levels.

Facilities

Computer Centre

All Departments, Schools and Centres of the Institute have computing facilities for their students. In addition, there is a Central Computer Centre which provides computing facilities for UG & PG courses and research works. The Computer Centre along with the departments, schools, centers, offices and hostels are connected to a campus vide fibre optic network. The entire campus including the hostels is Wi-Fi enabled.

Library

The Institute has a separate library building which is kept open from 9:00 am to midnight. The library provides online search facilities (OPAC) of its database from any computer connected to the Internet and also from the computers in the library dedicated for the users. Currently, the library has more than 1.4 lakhs text and reference books, and 40,000 bound volumes of journals. It also has a huge collection of documents including patents, standards, technical reports and pamphlets. The library possesses a good collection of old and rare books and journals of the nineteenth century. The library is a member of the Indian National Digital Library in Engineering Science and Technology (INDEST) and UGC-INFONET Digital Library Consortium of Information and Library Network (INFLIBNET) Centre and provides online access to full text of journals including American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), Economic and Political Weekly, IEEE /IIEE Electronic Library (IELOnline), ISID, JCCC@INFLIBNET, JSTOR, Science Direct, Springer Link and many others. It subscribes a large volume of e-books. The library also has different software which helps the students to write papers and reports in correct English with the plagiarism checking.

Workshop

The Workshop Complex has nine engineering workshops including Carpentry, Smithy, Welding and Painting, Fitting, Machine, Foundry and Pattern, Boiler, Electric, Automobile, and Project Model to offer workshop practice.

Accommodation

The Institute, with a student population of more than 4000, has 18 hostels including 3 girls’ hostels. However, residential accommodation of all students including UG students is not guaranteed due to shortage of seats in the hostels. Hostel accommodation shall be provided as per the availability of the rooms. All new UG students, who have been allotted hostel accommodation, should report themselves to the respective Hostel Warden on their first arrival at the Institute and produce the Receipt for the first installment of fees.

Hostel Dues and Mess Dues are to be paid by students residing in the hostels. All these dues are to be paid in advance at the time of admission to the first semester and also at the beginning of other semesters. The caution money, however, is to be paid one-time only during admission. The caution money shall be refunded after the completion of the course. However, caution money shall be forfeited if not claimed within one year after passing the course or leaving the Institution for any other reason, whichever is earlier. Students withdrawing from the Institute after admission may get some refund as per the refund policy of the Institute notified in the website.

All hostels residents should strictly abide the “Code of conduct for students / hostel residents” notified by the Institute which may be modified by the Competent authority from time to time. 

Health Service

The Institute has a hospital with Medical Officers and other supporting staff to serve the primary medical needs of the campus inmates. It provides 24 hours ambulance service. The hospital has an ID Ward to effectively isolate students suffering from infectious diseases. However, for serious cases the patients are referred to suitable city hospital.

Other Services

The Institute is provided with uninterrupted power supply and water supply. In addition, the Institute has its own captive generation plant and also water supply sources. There are three nationalized banks with ATM service inside the campus. The Institute has a well-managed guesthouse. The students can purchase their stationary items from two shops located near the main academic building.

Student Life at Institute

Students’ Welfare

The Students' of the Institute are encouraged to express themselves by creative means through cultural, social and sports activities. Headed by the Dean of Students’ Welfare, the students of this Institute are encouraged to participate in sports and games as well as various cultural activities like music, photography, dramatics, paintings, model making, creative writing and debating etc. in the Students’ Centre for creative expressions.

The students organize various inter-hostel competitions. The annual cultural meet REBECA is usually organized by the students during Spring. The students enthusiastically participate in INSTRUO - an Annual techno-management festival, where students from many Institutes across the country participate. The ROBO darshan club is a very popular society.

Financial Assistance

There is a 100% waiver of tuition fees for SC/ST/PwD students. A number of scholarships offered by the Global Alumni Association (GAABESU) of this Institute are also available to the students. For details, students are also advised to visit the website of GAABESU.

Training & Placement

Department of Human Resource Management (HRM) is responsible for facilitating job placements as well as practical training for the engineering students of this Institute. The department assists the students in arranging training in industrial and educational establishments during summer vacation and also coordinates Post Graduate Practical Training for fresh graduates.

Industry And Alumni Relations

Institute has Alumni Cell and Industry Institute Partnership Cell (IIPC) to strengthen the bond between Industry, Alumni and Institute and leverage the direct industrial opportunities to our graduate and postgraduate students.

Recreational/Extra Curricular activities

Office of the Dean of Students Welfare facilitates all students to use different facilities available at the campus. The students of this Institute are encouraged to participate in sports and games, various cultural activities like music, photography, dramatics, paintings, model making, creative writing, debating, as well as to explore innovation and incubation of business plans, etc. All students are encouraged to participate in games or some form of physical training. The students are advised to join the athletics Club and at least one of the societies in the Students’ Activity Centre. The campus has the following amenities for the students.

Location and Accessibility

IIEST, Shibpur, is conveniently located and well connected to all important locations in Howrah and Kolkata. Physically, it is adjacent to the A. J. C. Bose Indian Botanic Garden and only 1 km from Shalimar Railway Station. Howrah, Sealdah and Kolkata railway Stations are 6, 12 and 15 km away from the institute, respectively. Esplanade, the heart of the city of Kolkata, is only 9 km away and can be reached within 20 minutes by car and 30 minutes by bus. Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport, Kolkata is about 30 km away and well connected through roadways. Several types of public transport facilities like bus, mini-bus, taxi, auto-rickshaw, e-rickshaw etc. are available to reach other locations in the cities of Howrah and Kolkata.
