About the Institute

Established in 1955 by the visionary industrialist and philanthropist Mr. B.M. Birla, the Birla Institute of Technology (BIT), Mesra, stands as a venerable bastion of technical education in independent India. The Institute attained the status of a Deemed University under Section 3 of the UGC Act, in 1986. It is a full member of the Association of Indian Universities and the Association of Commonwealth Universities.

Nestled in Ranchi—the capital of Jharkhand, a realm celebrated as both a majestic mineral hub and an abode of serene natural forests, mountains, and cascading waterfalls—this distinguished institution has carved a glorious seven-decade legacy. To commemorate its Platinum Jubilee, the Institute was profoundly blessed by the Honourable President of India during a momentous event on February 15, 2025. Recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) as a Deemed to be University in 1986 under Section 3 of the UGC Act 1956, BIT Mesra has emerged as a premier self-financed engineering institution, seamlessly blending traditional engineering disciplines with avant-garde technological frontiers, all anchored upon a bedrock of fundamental sciences and modern innovation.

A trailblazer in the national arena, BIT Mesra holds the proud distinction of establishing the country’s first Department of Space Engineering and Rocketry in 1964—complete with a static rocket test-firing facility—thereby augmenting the national space mission even before the inception of ISRO. Furthermore, the Institute pioneered the creation of small manufacturing enterprises as creative offshoots of its engineering departments in the 1970s by founding the Small Industries Research and Development Organization (SIRDO). This visionary endeavour represents perhaps the earliest avatar of a Science and Technological Entrepreneurs Park (STEP) in the country, a concept subsequently adopted by the Government of India across various IITs and universities. This enduring spirit of enterprise harmonizes perfectly with the Honourable Prime Minister’s contemporary vision of fostering entrepreneurship through the "Start Up and Stand-Up India" campaign.

Academic Ecosystem and Pedagogy

The academic tapestry of the Institute comprises nearly twenty diverse departments and specialized centers, bolstered by state-of-the-art research sanctuaries. These include:

  • Advanced Computing & Design: High-Performance and Desktop Computing Laboratories, alongside the Central CAD Laboratory.
  • Fabrication & Testing: A Central Instrumentation Facility and a Central Workshop equipped with advanced machine, foundry, and fabrication units.
  • Creative & Linguistic Spaces: Sophisticated Design and Architecture Studios, specialized research laboratories, and a modern Language Laboratory.

Fully aligned with the progressive mandates of the National Education Policy (NEP 2020), BIT Mesra instituted the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) in 2018, adhering strictly to UGC and AICTE guidelines. This framework grants scholars the academic liberty to curate their learning from an expansive basket of core subjects and open electives spanning Engineering, Sciences, Humanities, and Management. Academic ascension is measured meticulously through a relative grading matrix.

Historically, the Institute has championed hands-on training, placing a profound emphasis on experiential and participative learning that compels students to engage in real-world problem-solving.This philosophy is seamlessly woven into the curriculum and enriched by vibrant technical clubs through regular industrial excursions, field studies, internships, and model-development exercises. In an exceptional gesture of nurturing scientific curiosity, the Institute, bolstered by its illustrious alumni network, offers a flagship program granting students an Immersive Summer Research Experience at prestigious universities across the United States.

Future Horizons and Research Fortitude

Embracing the dawn of a new era, BIT Mesra is currently executing a monumental capital investment strategy aimed at modernizing its civil and digital infrastructure, complemented by the phased recruitment of distinguished faculty and staff. Reflecting the evolving demands of global industry, the Institute has unveiled a sophisticated academic program in Quantitative Economics and Data Sciences, while simultaneously broadening the nomenclature and scope of several existing departments.

This evolution is naturally mirrored in its robust research ecosystem. The Institute maintains a formidable stronghold in scholarly inquiry, driving a multitude of sponsored research endeavors funded by premier agencies such as ISRO, DST, DRDO, BRNS, ICMR, CSIR, AICTE, ICSSR, and the Ministry of Rural Development. Demonstrating its contemporary relevance, BIT Mesra has recently initiated over sixty externally funded research and development projects valued at approximately Rs. 30 Crore, sanctioned by esteemed bodies including the DST, SERB, DBT, and the Ministry of Education (MoE).

Academic Structure

Grading System

The Academic Calendar

The academic odyssey at the Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra, unfolds across a structured annual timeline, commencing in July and concluding in June of the subsequent year. This academic cycle is divided into two primary terms, alongside an interim session:

  • Monsoon Semester (MO): Spanning from July to December, this semester initiates the academic year.
  • Spring Semester (SP): Extending from January to May, this term rounds out the standard academic calendar.
  • Short Semester (SS): A specialized interim session designed strategically to facilitate the timely clearance of academic backlogs.

Semester Registration and the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS)

Embracing modern educational paradigms, the Institute operates under the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS). This framework empowers scholars with the academic liberty to curate their learning matrices. Beyond the mandatory core courses of their respective disciplines, students can personalize their trajectories by selecting from an expansive repository of Programme Electives and Open Electives cutting across Engineering, Sciences, Humanities, and Social Sciences.

To maintain active academic standing, every scholar must formally register at the inception of each semester, strictly adhering to the dates prescribed in the official Academic Schedule. The completion of this enrollment process is contingent upon:

  1. The liquidation of the prescribed Institute Fee for the impending term.
  2. The deposition of a designated Hostel Mess Advance, a prerequisite mandatory for all scholars enrolled in residential programs.

Remedial and Additional Semesters

For scholars seeking to rectify academic deficiencies, the Institute provides distinct pathways, each governed by specific fiscal and administrative tenets:

Semester Type

Fiscal Implications

Academic Accountability

Short Semester (SS)

Requires a financial commitment equivalent to 30% of the Institute Tuition Fee levied during the preceding normal semester.

Specifically designated for expedited backlog clearance without disrupting the standard academic timeline.

Additional Semester

Mandates the payment of the standard, full Institute Fee.

Utilized if backlogs persist beyond the Short Semester; these terms are strictly counted toward the maximum permissible duration stipulated for the degree program.

Mandatory Attendance Framework

The Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra, maintains a rigorous policy regarding classroom engagement, expecting scholars to participate in all scheduled sessions for their enrolled courses.

  • The 75% Threshold: It is strictly mandatory for a student to maintain a minimum of 75% attendance across all registered subjects.
  • De-registration Consequences: Students who display irregularity or fall short of this 75% benchmark may be systematically de-registered from the respective course.
  • Examination & Residential Restrictions: Any scholar de-registered from a course due to an attendance deficit is automatically disqualified from appearing in the corresponding Semester End-Examination. In instances where a student is de-registered from all courses within a single semester, they face the immediate forfeiture of their campus accommodation and must vacate the hostel.
  • Re-instatement Protocols: Such students may be permitted to re-join the Institute in the subsequent semester, contingent upon a formal undertaking signed by both the student and their parents, pledging strict adherence to future attendance mandates. Crucially, no refund of the Institute Fee is applicable under these circumstances.

Academic Engagements Beyond the Campus

To bridge the gap between theoretical pedagogy and real-world execution, the BIT Mesra curriculum integrates substantial provisions for academic and industrial engagements outside the physical confines of the Institute.

  • Undergraduate Internships (B.Tech): During the final (8th) semester, engineering undergraduates can opt out of traditional classroom learning to pursue a Full Semester Industrial Project, Internship, or Research Project.
  • Postgraduate Research (M.Tech): Master of Technology scholars are afforded the flexibility to undertake industrial projects or corporate internships during their 3rd and 4th semesters.
  • Digital Academics (MOOCs): To foster autonomous learning, the Institute permits credit transfers via the NPTEL and SWAYAM portals. B.Tech students may substitute up to 4 MOOC courses, while M.Tech students can opt for 2 MOOC courses (each valued at 3 credits).

Beyond the formal curriculum, the Institute aggressively encourages students to benchmark their skills globally by participating in premier national and international engineering symposiums, system design challenges, and competitive coding hackathons.

Rules For Change Branch

There is a provision for branch change {B.Tech 2nd year students (3rd semester)} subject to availability of seats and considering the following criteria:

Maximum 10% of the existing students of any discipline/branch shall be considered to change the discipline/branch purely on performance merit basis.
Students who have completed all the examinations of the first two semesters in the first attempt and have minimum CGPA as under, shall be considered for such branch sliding.
    1. General Category/EWS/OBC/EBC – 8.0 and above

Industry And Alumni Relations

Industry and Alumni Relations

The institute organises alumni reunions for different batches in the campus. We are proud to be one of the very few organizations blessed to host the Diamond Jubilee Alumni Meet (1958 -1962 Batch) on 29th November 2022. The zeal and enthusiasm with which these alumni meet each other were worth praising. The batch of 1971 – 1976 also celebrated their Golden Jubilee reunion on 6th February 2026. The class of 2010 (2006 – 2010) celebrated their 15 years of passing out at BIT on 8th November 2025. In fact, alumni reunion is a regular feature at BIT Mesra. Apart from this, BIT has a custom of inviting batches that passed out 40 and 25 years ago to celebrate their reunions on the foundation day. In the forthcoming Foundation Day on 15th July 2026, the alumni who passed in 1986 and who passed in 2001 have been invited.

The alumni portal at www.alumni.bitmesra.ac.in, launched in February 2020, has received a very good response. This platform offers amazing features that enable alumni to stay connected with their colleagues and friends as well as explore professional opportunities. Presently, the institute has a data bank of about 45000+ registered alumni in the portal. The portal has become a valuable tool for engaging alumni worldwide.

The institute has a registered alumni association in the name of BITMAA (Birla Institute of Technology Mesra Alumni Association) to strengthen the relationship and acting as an apex body for alumni engagement and outreach. All the chapters across the globe have their representations in BITMAA. The day-to-day activities of BITMAA is governed by the Steering Committee of Alumni (SCA), which works on the suggestions of the Executive Body of Alumni (EBA). BITMAA has its own bank account, and is 12A and 80G compliant.

With the support of alumni in the US, students in the undergraduate engineering program (6th Semester) are sent to reputable US universities during the summer under the Immersive Summer Research Experience (ISRE) program. The summer internship is conducted at the Illinois Institute of Technology-Chicago, Carnegie Mellon University-Pittsburgh, Northeastern University-Boston, Columbia University-New York, and the Georgia Institute of Technology-Atlanta. To date, 106 students have already benefited from the above program. This year, thirteen students will be visiting the above universities to pursue their summer internship.

Our alumni also support us through Faculty Research programs, with the objective of exposing our faculty to contemporary research practices in the US. Alumni also came forward to fund research at the institute. This year, 9 research projects are fully funded by alumni to enhance the institute's research capabilities.

Institute celebrates its Foundation Day on the 14th and 15th of July every year. This is an annual event introduced to reach out to our alumni members spread across the globe in the corporate sector as well as in academics. Distinguished Alumni Awards are conferred on our alumni across six categories who have made us proud in India and abroad through their contributions.

The alumni members also support students at the institute by offering mentorship in their respective domains of expertise. This mentorship is being offered by our esteemed alumni across the globe who are well-settled in academia or industry to train the students and make them industry-ready.
