The Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme “RASHTRIYA UCHCHATAR SHIKSHA ABHIYAN (RUSA)” has approved for the Upgradation of the erstwhile Pondicherry Engineering College to a Technological University and to incorporate it as an affiliating, teaching and research University at Puducherry to facilitate and promote studies, research, technology incubation, product innovation and extension work in Technology, Management and Science and also to achieve excellence in higher and technical education and other matters connected therewith or incidental thereto.

Puducherry Technological University came into effect from 5th September 2020 officially and started admission under the banner of PTU from the academic year 2020-21.  

A Brief information about Pondicherry Engineering College (PEC):

Pondicherry Engineering College was established in 1984 by MHRD, Government of India under the Seventh Five Year Plan to meet the requirement of an engineering institution in the Union Territory of Puducherry.  Ever since its inception, the University has maintained a steady academic and research growth both vertically and horizontally with an aim to offer quality technical education and cater to the diverse requirements of the industries besides the expectation of the prevailing societal system. The University currently offers 9 UG and fourteen PG programmes in core engineering disciplines besides MCA, M.Sc and PhD programmes in all engineering disciplines and basic sciences. As the first University (erstwhile engineering college) in the Union Territory of Puducherry, it preserves its uniqueness among all professional institutions which were started later. The University enjoys significant autonomy for administration. The institution was initially affiliated to Pondicherry University and has been granted ‘permanent affiliation’ as the first and significant step towards attainment of academic autonomy and obtained Autonomous status from 2014-15 onwards.  

PTU is ranked in the band of (150 – 200) in the Engineering Category by NIRF India Rankings 2023. 

The major strengths of the institution are its location, well-connected by land and air routes to major cities in India, highly qualified faculty with 98% doctorate, diverse student population from across the country and from foreign countries and latest infrastructure facilities with state-of-the-art laboratories in the emerging fields of Engineering / Technology. PTU (erstwhile PEC) alumni are spread far and wide across the globe holding eminent positions in top global Corporates, Universities and Civil Services. The University, preserving its brand name, attracts the meritorious students of UT of Puducherry in addition to students from neighboring states. The placement of students through campus is progressive since inception which includes top recruiters viz., HP, TCS, ZOHO, HCL, QualComm, Mbit Wireless, Accenture, NOKIA, INFOSYS, RELIANCE, CTS, L&T INFOTECH. PTU / PEC is recognized as a feeder institution by many of the Universities in USA, UK and Australia as well.

 In addition to that, Atal Incubation Centre (AIC) PEC Foundation enables the budding entrepreneurs to showcase and test their abilities to run a start up business in the emerging area of engineering / technology.

NPTEL - PTU Ranked as 17th and awarded with AA Rating  at IIT Chennai (2022).

PTU has been rated ‘AAAA’ certification and recognized as the one of the best Engineering institutes in the year 2023 by CAREERS 360. Recently PTU received the prestigious “IEEE India Council award”.

Considering all these aspects, the strategic plan for institutional development has been prepared with the following specific vision: “To evolve into a university of global eminence through transformative learning and research in frontier areas of engineering and technology towards developing holistic technology leaders, innovators and entrepreneurs”.

The Training and Placement (TNP) Office is the nodal point of contact for companies to interact with Puducherry Technological University (PTU) Erstwhile Pondicherry Engineering College (PEC). The TNP office maintains a close connection with various companies, with nearly 92 companies visiting the campus every year for campus interviews. To give students exposure to the application of technology in the industry and hands-on work experience, the institute mandates that students complete a minimum of two internships in industries engaged in core industrial activities during their semester holidays. These internships are integrated into the curriculum and are credit-bearing. 

The students of PTU secure placements in various sectors, including Core Engineering, Software/IT, and Finance/Consulting. Major companies like JP Morgan Chase & Co,  Amazon, Microchip, Mbit Wireless, L&T, Kaar Technologies, Lucas TVS, Sanmar, Bounteous, LatentView, Accenture, Tata Consultancy Services, Cognizant and many other visits our campus for recruitment every year. 

Given the constantly evolving global recruitment landscape, it is crucial for students to acquire a diverse set of skills to maintain their employability. 

• To this end, we provide training by AICTE-approved training partners every semester for a period of 15 days for 650 students. 

• Additionally, we offer in-house training by three dedicated trainers in the following areas: Coding, Soft Skills, and Aptitude for 650 students and the training is an integral part of academic curriculum. 

• This training is conducted for 3 hours per week for each program over a period of 15 weeks per semester from 5th semester onwards.

• Furthermore, industry readiness programs, featuring speakers from top companies, are organized for final year and third year students to create awareness of the latest technologies.

The following facilities are available to aid the process:

• Auditoriums for conducting pre-placement talks and written tests.

• Well-furnished, air-conditioned rooms for conducting TNP sessions, mock tests, interviews and group discussions.

• Fully computerized office facilities.

• Student volunteers to assist on the day of the company visit.
