The Institute was set up initially as a project of the North Eastern Council (NEC) for providing a system of education to create technical manpower at various levels for the development of the North Eastern Region of the country. The North Eastern Regional Institute of Science and Technology (NERIST) is a unique Institute in the country, having unconventional and innovative academic Programmes. It was established in the year 1983 by the Government of India. Its foundation stone was laid by the former President of India Late Gyani Zail Singh on 4th March, 1984. It is autonomous and fully funded by the Ministry of Education, Govt. of India since April 1, 1994. It got the status of a DEEMED TO BE UNIVERSITY on 31st May 2005 under section 3 of the UGC Act 1956. It is governed by the Board of Management (BoM) comprising representatives of the Ministry of Education, Govt. of India, the eight beneficiary states of the North East India, AICTE and eminent educationists. It is residential, and is spread over 513 acres of land. All the Under graduates and Post Graduates Engineering Courses are approved by AICTE, New Delhi. All the under graduate programs  were accredited by NBA upto 30.06.2027 and the Under Graduate program of Electrical Engineering has provisionally accredited  upto 30.06.2025.  Academic Programmes in the Institute started during August 1986 Agricultural Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Forestry. Our graduates have been placed in reputed organizations at national and international levels. There are 12 (Twelve) degree awarding departments including a Center for Management Studies. The Institute offers bachelor’s degree programmes in 6 (six) Engineering disciplines and one in Forestry.
