Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering
Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at Indian Institute of Technology Patna was established in 2013 that constitutes of five specializations namely, Structural Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Water Resources Engineering, and Environmental Engineering. Since its inception, the Department has continually upgraded itself in terms of academic programmes and
state-of-the-art teaching and research laboratories. The Department currently offers BTech and MTech degree in Civil Engineering. The Department also provides doctoral programmes on emerging research areas (viz., Structural Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Water Resources Engineering, and Environmental Engineering). All our curricula are designed keeping in mind the infrastructure requirements for improved quality of life in a growing society as well as for industry and economic development with a firm intent to meet the challenges of tomorrow. Till now total 107 BTech students are graduated who took admission between 2013 and 2017. The students are well placed in reputed private and Government organisations. Many students have opted for higher studies in best institutes both in India and abroad. The Department attracts the finest young and dynamic faculty members, and the best of students for its Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral programmes. The CEE department is an innovative and vibrant place of learning, where students pursue their educational and research interests in order to lead the next generation in transforming the disciplines of civil and environmental engineering. The students are encouraged to work for their project/dissertation on topics of industrial and societal needs. The presence of the
state-of-the-art experimental and computational facilities as well as active industry-academia interaction and rigorous training (both inside the classrooms/laboratories as well as through extensive industrial/research internships) prepare the students of the Department to meet more than adequately any challenge in their competitive professional life and also take on leadership roles in later years in their career. Goal of the CEE Department is to reach the level of excellence in latest technical front as well as advanced research; to provide a high-quality teaching and learning environment in the field of Civil Engineering to make students capable of innovative thinking. The Department is continuously striving for greater heights in teaching and research that is relevant to the industry and shall help in nation building. Department is actively involved in basic as well as advanced research and provides high quality technical advisory support through various R&D projects and consultancy to various organizations.

Department of Electrical Engineering, IIT Patna
Department of Electrical Engineering has started in 2008 and since last year the department grown to the top level of core research and teaching in the advanced topics of electrical engineering. We have strong undergraduate program B. Tech., and post graduate programs like M. Tech and PhD in various specialization of electrical engineering.
We revise our curriculum according to the need of today’s research and industry applications. Hence the teaching is focused on fundamental principles of electrical engineering and applications. The primary focus of our curriculum is to convey technical know-how to students, promote their problem solving skills and innovation of new technologies. Department offers large number of optional courses so that our undergraduate students are encouraged to undertake various research projects.
We carry out collaborative and interdisciplinary research in various industries, reputed institutes and research centers worldwide. We have modern research and laboratory facility to cater the needs of young faculty members. Our department has a distinguished record in both teaching and research. Faculty members have excellent academic credentials and are highly regarded all over the world. They have been conferred with many prestigious awards at national and international levels. Teacher Learning center for Internet of Things in association with IIT Kanpur, Kharagpur and Indore was developed in the Department of Electrical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Patna. Under Aegis of Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya National Mission on Teachers and Teaching (PMMMNMTT), MHRD, GOVERNMENT OF INDIA. The sponsored projects of national important such as IMPRINT have been awarded to the department. Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, IIT Patna
The Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) was established in September, 2013. The department has five (5) dynamic faculty members, with their teaching, research and consultancy activities in various areas ranging from metal, ceramic and polymer. At present, department offers M.Tech. and Ph.D degrees. Over the last four years, Department takes pride for developing the wide spectrum of state-of-the-art laboratories both for teaching and research purposes.
MSE has set-up the world-class plasma spray coating facility (OerlikonMetco, USA), which has the potential of fabricating the large domain of metal and ceramic coating for the wear and corrosion resistance applications.
In addition, sophisticated micro indentation with the scratch tester (Microtest, Spain), potentiostat/galvanostat (GAMRY, USA) for measuring the corrosion rate, basic sample preparation lab including the low speed diamond saw (Buehler, USA), grinder and polisher (Allied Hi-Tech, USA) is being established. Ceramic and nanomaterials lab focuses on the area of materials chemistry of advanced materials which probes into the synthesis issues for the nanoparticles (via materials chemistry routes) and try to understand the complexities involved via different structural characterisation methods. Polymer science and technology lab in department of MSE has set-up the polymer synthesis, processing and testing lab which have several processing equipments such as Haake internal mixer (Thermo Fisher Scientific), micro injection molding machine (Thermo Fisher Scientific), compression molding machine, two roll mixing mill and moving die rheometer. Polymer testing and characterization lab facilities include the Universal testing machine (Zwick-Roell), dynamic mechanical analysis (TA instruments), modular compact rheometer (Anton-Paar) and thermogravimetric analyzer (TA instruments).
Department has total of 10 PhD research scholars at present and department has published more than 23 papers in peer-reviewed international journal (American Chemical Society, Polymer, Scripta Materialia, Materials Science and Engineering A, Journal of Alloys and Compounds, Applied Surface Science, Journal of European Ceramic Society etc.) in last 3-4 years. Over the last four years, department has undertaken the sponsored projects worth of ~ 200 Lakhs from various funding agency like DST, SERB, ISRO, NRB, Denka Japan. In addition, consultancy project of more than 40 lakhs have been awarded to MSE faculties from the top MNC’s like MRF, Tata Steel, Carborundum Universal Limited (Murugappa group).
Department of Materials Science and Engineering organized an International Workshop on Reverse Engineering of Rubber Products: Concepts, Tools and Techniques on May 29, 2014. The main objectives of the Workshop are to explain the principles and science behind rubber formulation development by reverse engineering methods.
Department of Materials Science and Engineering organized an International Conference on Polymers and Allied Materials (ICPAM 2014) during May 30-31, 2014.
Faculty member from Department of MSE was instrumental in organizing the most prestigious TEDx IITPatna event on November 13, 2016.
The department continues to strive for excellence and realising its vision of becoming a leading department in the country for teaching, research and consultancy in the emerging areas of material science and engineering.
Department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering
The vision of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering department at IIT Patna is to perennially strive to achieve national and international recognition through the educational and research achievements and the professional service of the faculty, staff and students. Our mission is to provide students with an atmosphere conducive to developing new and bright ideas at every professional fronts. Our endeavors will pertain to provide overall educational experience that prepares our students to become successful professional chemical engineers capable of undertaking both life-long learning and further advanced studies.
The Chemical and Biochemical Engineering department offers post-graduate program (Ph.D and M.Tech by Research) in addition to B. Tech undergraduate program. These undergraduate and graduate programs aim to produce highly-qualified graduates who are self-motivated, independent, clear thinking individuals and are capable of undertaking an independent work in industries, research and development programs, and government as well as public sectors units.
The department is trying to achieve fully developed infrastructure and well-equipped laboratories in chemical and biochemical engineering. In our newly developed departmental library, we have good collection of reference books related to chemical and biochemical engineering. Apart from this, department envisions to regularly organizing conferences, seminars, and workshops on its own or in collaboration with other elite institutions. As of now, the department has successfully developed most of the undergraduate labs primarily related to chemical engineering curriculum. In addition, department is also excelling at research front and currently equipped with the biochemical lab, computational nanoscience lab, process systems engineering lab, energy science lab, separation processes lab, and gas-solid interaction lab. We are also approaching industries for synergistic collaboration and subsequent mutual growth.
Computer Science & Engineering Department
Computer Science and Engineering atthe IIT Patna is an international center of excellence in the theory and application of computing. The subject of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) is currently revolutionizing a wide range of human activities, including Digitalization and the associated growth of data are affecting all areas. It is also itself undergoing revolutionary change, with the introduction of new algorithmic techniques in areas as diverse as natural language processing, data science, AI, graphics, Security and high performance computing. Our mission is to anticipate and drive these developments in the areas in which we have world-class expertise.
The Computer Science & Engineering department at IIT Patna was one of the first engineering disciplines of the institute. The department was formally established in the year 2008. The first batch of the undergraduate programme me graduated in the year 2012. A major aim of the department is to train students and make them ready for the industry and academia. The department has cent percent placement record for undergraduates.
The department runs two B.Tech, (Btech in Computer Science and Engineering and Btech In AI and Data Science),
M.Tech and PhD programs. A joint M.Tech programme (Mathematics and Computing) is also offered with the department of Mathematics. The total student strength of the department is about three hundred. The academic curriculum is constantly revised to keep in pace with the current industry and research trends. In order to allow students flexibility in choosing their courses, the number of elective courses has been increased. With a view to encourage creative ideas, the department introduced a lab course on Innovative Design in the undergraduate programme.

Research
The department lays great emphasis in research and development. In the previous year (2020), the research publications of the department include 92 journal papers and 77 international conference papers. The department has close interaction with research institutes both in India and abroad, government agencies and industry. There are about32 undergoing/approved sponsored research projects. The department also organized multiple international conference, workshops and GIAN courses.
Computing Facilities
The department has fully equipped labs to cater to the teaching and research needs of the students and faculty members. The department has two labs each for undergraduate, M.Tech and PhD students. The department also has a hardware lab equipped with processors and other peripherals. All the systems are connected tothe campus network. The computing facilities of the department include high end servers, compute clusters and storage facilities. In addition to the teaching labs, the department has fiveresearch labs: Elsevier Centre for Excellence of Natural Language processing, ezDI Research Lab on Health Informatics, Advanced Computing Lab, Network Security Lab, and Embedded Computing Lab.

Department of Physics, IIT Patna
The Department of Physics was established and started its activity from 2008. The department has rich tradition of teaching and research. Currently, we offer two-year M.Sc. program in Physics and Ph. D. program in various fore-front research areas of experimental and theoretical physics.
With a feeling of deep pleasure and satisfaction, the department introduces a B.Tech. program in Engineering Physics from this year. We welcome the young physics enthusiasts to join our B. Tech program, which is designed to provide an in-depth exposure in basic and applied physics. The salient features of the B. Tech in Engineering Physics program include a solid grounding in core areas, a sound training in physics, a rich variety of electives, and an exposure to frontier technologies. Some of the key courses in applied areas include Cryogenic Engineering, Laser Physics, Computer Aided Physics, Photovoltaics and Fuel Cell, Physics of Nanomaterials, Medical Physics, Particle Physics, Quantum Optics etc.
Total fifteen esteemed faculty members of the department are actively involved in research and development in challenging areas of both theory and experiment. Currently, the main research emphasis of the department comprises Condensed Matter Physics, Quantum Physics, Optics & Photonics, Biophysics, Atomic & Molecular Physics, and High-Energy Physics. We have state of the art research facilities in the department to support our academic programs and research.

Department of Chemistry
The Department of Chemistry in IIT Patna has been established since the setting up of the Institute in 2008 and has evolved itself into a well known, reputed academic research center of learning in this region. Presently, the dept. has eleven extremely motivated, well qualified faculty members with a strong commitment for high quality teaching and research in the department. The Department also has one scientific officer and two junior technical superintendents to ensure smooth running of the Department.
The strong research orientation of the department is evident from the large number of project grants funded by
Dept. of Science & Technology (DST), Dept. of Biotechnology (DBT),
Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, Department of Atomic Energy and others, since inception in 2008. The faculty members are well recognized both nationally and internationally. Research in the department has resulted in over 100 peer reviewed
national and international journal publications (of high impact factor and H-index) with more than 500 citations.
The department of chemistry also offers chemistry courses at different levels. The department started the PhD program in Chemistry from July 2009 and till date, twelve students have already graduated. Presently, more than thirty research scholars are enrolled in the PhD programme of Chemistry dept. in IIT Patna. Three research associates are also working in the department who are being funded by prestigious postdoctoral fellowships schemes such as National Post Doctoral Fellowship (N-PDF). The department is also offering B.Tech. in Chemical Science and Technology course in which sixty three students are enrolled currently. The department is also actively participating in the M.Tech. program in Nanoscience and Technology, jointly offered by the Physics and Chemistry depts. A master program in chemistry (M.Sc) has been initiated from last academic year (2016). The alumni of the departments are placed in various reputed industries and foreign universities for higher education.
A vibrant multidisciplinary research program in the Department of Chemistry at IIT Patna is supported by energetic faculty members and state-of-the-art research facilities. Department of Mathematics, IIT Patna
Mathematics is one of the finest academic streams of human development that provide solutions to our inquiry of daily activities systematically. It has been motivated as much by our imagination and fascination with its inherent beauty and complexity as by the practical considerations of information technology, data transmission, architecture, scientific development. In the modern world, mathematics thrives in its central role as the language of traditional science while reaching further into the realms of engineering, finance, and social sciences.
The Department of Mathematics was established with the inception of IIT Patna in August 2008. The Department is committed to impart high-quality education in Mathematics at Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels.
Faculty members of the department have versatile experience in teaching as well as in research in different areas of Mathematics. The research areas of the department include subject fields such as Algebraic Coding Theory,
Algebraic Graph Theory, Algorithmic Graph Theory, Applications of Differential Equations in Biology, Bayesian Statistics, Differential Manifolds, Finite Group Theory: p-groups, Fixed Point Theory, Fuzzy logic & its application, Topological Graph Theory, Mathematical Control Theory, Mathematical Modeling in Ecology and Epidemiology, Mathematical Modeling of HIV dynamics, Nonlinear Dynamics, Nonlinear Optimization, Numerical Analysis and Computations, Reliability Estimation, Rings & Modules, Schur Multiplier, Semi-infinite Programming, and Variational Inequality.
The department is currently running M.Sc. in Mathematics, M. Tech. Mathematics and Computing, and Ph. D. in all above-mentioned areas.
The B.S. (Mathematics and Computing) is starting this year (2021) itself. Our M. Tech. & Ph. D. students are placed in various academic institutions and industries. Apart from well-equipped seating labs for M. Sc., M. Tech. and Ph. D. students, the department has developed a computational research lab to encourage research areas that require high computing facilities. The department extends support to all B. Tech. programs of other departments in the institute by offering compulsory courses as well as relevant electives courses that are useful in different engineering applications.
Department of Humanities and Social Sciences
The Department of Humanities and Social Sciences incessantly tries to provide a humane perspective to the various technical branches at IIT Patna. It strives consistently to excel in its efforts day by day. Innovative and pertinent research is one such tool through which excellence can be aspired. The department envisions establishing itself as one of the best research platforms to young minds who have the undying thirst for knowledge. Past and ongoing researches in Economics, English language and literature, Linguistics, Management, Psychology, Public Health and Sociology not only try to answer useful inquiries but also try to use learning and imaginative actions as powerful tools to add to the enrichment and progress of human society. The uniqueness of the department will be realized by its successful and innovative researches along with the various interdisciplinary and multi-disciplinary collaborations both within and beyond the institute.
The Department has 7 faculty members who offer core and elective courses at the B.Tech, M. Tech and PhD levels. The department has a PhD programme of its own. Apart from this the Department of HSS organizes conferences, workshops and foreign language programmes. Given the mandate of the Government of India towards entrepreneurship, the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences offers open electives to B.Tech. students on entrepreneurship and innovation.

Department of Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) is involved in publishing quality research papers in reputed Scopus indexed journals. Large numbers of sponsored research projects were also awarded by various funding agencies. Some of the highlights are as follows:
Dr Rajendra N Paramanik is the editor of a Festschrift volume on International Economics and Finance by Springer Nature publication, Singapore.(In press).He has also awarded a consultancy project by TCS- GuruCool iON course-Introduction to Business Finance course.
Dr Meghna Dutta’s paper ‘Globalisation, Corruption and Women Empowerment’ was the most read paper of Economic Papers published by Wiley. She has also awarded a project titled Farmers' income: Issues Determinants and Strategies by ICSSR.
She has recently published papers in SN Business and Economics, Springer and
in The Global Journal of Emerging Market Economies, Sage Publications.
Dr Sweta Sinha (as a PI) has recently completed a project on ‘Designing Disaster Preparedness Training Modules using Indigenous Knowledge and Increasing Community Awareness through Contextualized Techniques in Bihar’ (Indian Council of Social Science Research).
Dr Richa Chaudhary has completed a project on Green HRM and Environmental sustainability funded by ICSSR. Dr Richa has received Young Woman Management Researcher Award by Association of Indian Management Scholars (AIMS International) for the year 2018 and her paper was also awarded in the 2019 with Emerald Literati Awards.
Dr Papia Raj has a GIAN course on (Waste Management and Health Care); CEP (Health Informatics; Principles and Practices in Social Research) courses & grants from various organization like ICSSR .She has published with reputed journals & editorial board of journals including SAGE Open, Environmental Health Insights, among others.
Dr Priyanka Tripathi has received three grants in 2021, a research project grant from ICCSR entitled, "Mapping Domestic Abuse and Violence in the time of Covid-19: A Study from Bihar (2021)", a conference grant from Postcolonial Association, UK for her onference, “Decolonising the Panel, Deconstructing the Gutter" focusing on the Postcolonial Studies in Comics and Graphic Narratives from South Asia and ‘Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL)’ grant with Pamela Lothspeich to teach 'Transnational Feminisms of the Middle East and South Asia' in Fall 2021, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.
Dr Aditya Raj has received funding from Ministry of Rural Development (Government of India) among others he is a research advisor to students from Stanford University (Isabel Salovaara, PhD student) & Guelph University (Elijah Dalton, MA student). He has published and presented with academic associations like International Sociological Association and Canadian Sociological Association. He is also a recipient of M N Srinivas Memorial Prize (given to best young sociologist under 40 years) by the Indian Sociological Society.
Dr Smriti Singh has recently completed ATAL-AICTE sponsored FDP on Soft Skills. She is also one of the Co-PIs in a sponsored project Designing Disaster Preparedness Training Modules using Indigenous Knowledge and Increasing Community Awareness through Contextualized Techniques in Bihar’ (Indian Council of Social Science Research). Dr Singh has also edited a book jointly with Dr Sweta Sinha ‘Conscious Re-imaginings of Shakespeare’s Plays’, Bahri Publications, 2017.
Dr Nalin Bharti is about to finish his project ‘India-Japan Trade and Investment: What new after CEPA’ jointly with Professor Takahiro Sato, Professor, Kobe University, Japan funded by ICSSR-JSPS. He has received the best paper award (in the English presentation category) at the 14th Symposium for young Researchers-FIKUSZ 2019 at Obuda University, Budapest on 29th November ,2019.He was also elected as a member of Executive Council (EC) of the Indian Society of Labor Economics(ISLE) established in 1957.
CLASROOMS AT IIT PATNA
All classrooms of the institute are equipped with modern audio-visual electronic gadgets and
AIR CONDITIONED. The academic buildings have state-of-the-art laboratories.
It also houses Computer Centre with total 1 GBPS (provided by NKN) internet connections and adequate server infrastructure. Laboratories in Basic Electronics, Analog Electronics, Digital Electronics, VSLI, Control, Instrumentation and Communication are also located in these buildings. Besides this, it has two laboratories namely Hardware Lab of Computer Science and Engineering Department, and Digital and Signal Processing Lab of Electrical Engineering Department. houses several Mechanical Engineering Laboratories, viz. , Advanced Manufacturing Lab, Micromachining Lab, Dynamics Lab, Fluid Mechanics Lab, Heat and Mass Transfer Lab, Sustainable Energy Research Lab, Instruments and Control Lab, , Material Testing Lab, Metrology and Metallographic Lab, Robotics Lab, Tribology Lab and Thermal and Fluid Transport Lab. . Mechanical Department has also a separate workshop building having different conventional and CNC machines. It also houses some parts of Labs such I.C. Engine, FMS etc. The department also has CAD/CAM Lab in tutorial block.
The Electrical Engineering workshop building has an Electrical Machines Laboratory and an Advanced Electrical Engineering Laboratory. The Science block has well equipped classrooms with modern teaching gadgets, faculty chambers and advanced laboratories for Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics departments. This includes Materials Research Lab and Optics Research Lab of the Physics Department; Chemistry Instruments Lab, Chemistry Research Lab and Bioscience Lab of the Chemistry Department and Computational Research Lab of the Mathematics Department. All these Labs are home for numerous state-of-the art equipments. IIT Patna has recently developed three highly sophisticated virtual classrooms equipped with ultra modern electronic gadgets funded by Department of Information Technology, Government of India, under the National Knowledge Network project. These classrooms add to the concept of virtual classroom where one can learn something from the teacher who is teaching remotely. The newly iaugatred
building also has a central library, the administrative office, a modern dispensary and individual offices for faculty members . The central library is stocked with sufficient number of text and reference books. Online access to various technical and scientific journals under the INDEST-AICTE consortium is available. IIT Patna has a team of around 91 young and dynamic faculty members. Many more are expected to join by the end of this year. Faculty members are extremely active and engaged in teaching, research and developmental activities of the Institute. All of them are accommodated within the campus .
Credit System The B. Tech programs consist of 8 semesters spread over 4 academic years. A student takes 5 to 6 theory courses in addition to laboratory courses in each semester. Credits are allotted to various courses depending on the number of lecture/tutorial/laboratory hours per week. A student's performance in a course is continuously evaluated throughout the semester and culminates in the award of a grade on a 10-point scale. Based on the performance of a student, each student is awarded a final letter grade in each subject at the end of the semester. The letter grades and the corresponding grade points are as follows:

The students' Semester Performance Index (SPI) is evaluated by weighted average of grade points secured in all the courses registered by the student in that semester. The Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) representing the weighted average of the grade points secured by the students in all the semesters is also recorded.
