About the Institute:

About the Institute:

Indian Institute of Technology Dharwad (IIT Dharwad) is an autonomous premier Science and Technology Institute established by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India in 2016 under the mentorship of IIT Bombay. Academic activities at IIT Dharwad commenced in July 2016 with B.Tech. course being offered in three core branches, namely, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. The current intake at the institute stands at 40 students in each of the specializations.

The current campus of IIT Dharwad has been established within the WALMI (Water and Land Management Institute) campus (135 acres), which is adjacent to Dharwad bench of High Court Belur, on the National Highway (NH-4) that connects Mumbai-Bengaluru. With the availability of regular transport service, the campus is easy to reach from any point in Dharwad and all the major facilities are within a 10 km radius from the campus. IIT Dharwad is less than 30 km away from Hubbali, the second largest city in Karnataka. WALMI has been generous in providing the necessary infrastructure for the students' hostels, class rooms, laboratories etc.

IIT Dharwad commenced its operations in 2016 from its interim campus (in WALMI) located near Dharwad bench of the High Court on the National Highway (NH-4) connecting Pune and Bengaluru. The WALMI (Water And Land Management Institute) campus of IIT Dharwad is fully equipped with classrooms, laboratories, modern hostel buildings. This campus is expected to serve the needs of IIT Dharwad for the first few years. The 470 acre new IIT Dharwad campus is expected to come up in a couple of years and is located two kilometers away from the Pune-Bengaluru National Highway (NH4).

Mentored by IIT Bombay, the academic activities of IIT Dharwad are well tuned to bring out the best in every student. The academics at IIT Dharwad is focused on bringing fun and joy into the learning process by a judicious mix of rigorous classroom course work backed up by exciting projects where students enjoy the experiential learning by hands-on design-build-operate type activities. The exciting journey commences with the first semester “introduction to hands-on-engineering” course where, unlike in the usual workshop course, faculty members from Mechanical, Electrical and CS branches train the students on “mechatronic systems” approach.

Academic Structure:

Academic Structure

The Institute offers undergraduate (B.Tech.) programs in engineering with specializations in Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and  Engineering Physics.

IIT Dharwad follows a semester system. An academic year (July-April) consists of two semesters, each of approximately 16 weeks duration. The first semester begins in the last week of July and ends by the last week of November. The second semester starts in the first week of January and ends by the last week of April. In each of the semesters, a student is required to register for the relevant courses listed in the curriculum for that semester.

The Institute follows a credit system. Credits are allotted to various courses depending upon the number of lectures, tutorials and laboratory hours per week. The student’s performance in a course is continuously evaluated throughout the semester and culminates in the award of a Grade on a 10-point scale. Performance in a semester is evaluated in terms of the weighted average of grade points secured in all the courses registered in that semester, which is known as Semester Performance Index (SPI). A Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) is the weighted average of the grade points obtained in all the courses registered by the student since the time of joining the Institute.

The B.Tech. programs consist of eight semesters spread over four years. During the first year all branches will have primarily common curriculum
Rules For Change Branch:

RULES FOR CHANGE OF BRANCH (2020-21)

This relates to the modified rules for change of branch at IIT Dharwad during the academic year 2020-21. As an Institute policy, students are eligible to apply for a change of branch/Programme after completing the first two semesters and before the start of the third semester. All branch transfers can be effected only once at the beginning of the second academic year. No application for change of branch during the subsequent academic years will be entertained.

1.       The present Eligibility Criteria for applying for a change of branch / Programme are:

(a)     Completion of the prescribed course credits in the first two semesters.

(b)     No backlog at the end of the first year.

(c)     Secured SPI or CPI of at least 8 for General, EWS and OBC category students; and at least 7 for SC, ST and PwD category students.

As a consequence of (a)-(c), branch change facility will therefore be not available if a student has opted for ‘S’ Grade in any course in the previous semester. Further, in these unprecedented crisis times, to be favourable to the students, the Institute will consider the higher of SPI of the first semester and CPI of the first two semesters for branch change.

2.       (a)   Before beginning the allocation, additional seats are made available in each branch, limited to a maximum of 10% of its sanctioned strength.

(b)   While students are allotted seats of General/EWS and reserved type during admission, this data is not used during branch change. Each available seat may be occupied by students of any category. For students of SC/ST/PwD category, concession in eligibility criteria is given as per rule 1.

3.       An eligible student's request for a shift from branch A to branch B will be considered valid if any one of the following two sets of criteria are satisfied.

(a)          Set 1               (i)     The CPI of the student is at least 9

(ii)         There is a seat available in Branch B

Set 2               (i)     There is a seat available in Branch B

(b)    The strength in branch A, from which a change is being sought, does not fall below its sanctioned strength by more than 25%.

(c)     there is no student with higher CPI who is currently being denied a change of branch to “B” due to rule (b).

Procedure:

Among all valid requests, a student with the highest either SPI or CPI is chosen and a shift performed. If a student with SPI or CPI ‘x’ is shifted from branch A to branch B then every student with SPI or CPI greater than ‘x’ with a request for branch B will be shifted to branch B, even if their request violates 3-(b) above. If necessary, extra seats will be created to accommodate them. Shifts as above are performed as long as there are valid requests.

Note that even though a student may have been allotted a seat of lower preference earlier due to unavailability of a seat of higher preference, his/her request for the higher preference seat may become valid later because of availability of seats.
