About the Institute:
National Institute Of Technology, Silchar (राष्ट्रीय प्रौद्योगिकी संस्थान, सिलचर) is one of the 31 National Institutes of Technology of India and was established in 1967 as a Regional Engineering College in Assam. In 2002 it was upgraded to the status of National Institute of Technology and was declared as Institute of National Importance under the National Institutes of Technology Act, 2007.

Student Life at Institute:

The Institute recognizes that a major concern to all students and parents is the availability and quality of accommodation and food. There are separate hostels for boys and girls. There are 20 furnished hostels; 13 for boys, 5 for girls, one Married Scholar Hostel and one for Foreign students . To ensure security in Hostels (Boys/Girls), 24 hour security guards are available.

Most importantly among the  20 hostels, 2 hostels are exclusively for accommodation of B. Tech. 1st semester students (boys), Capacity: 690. All first year girl students will be accommodated in a single hostel.

Facilities in each room are furnished with cots, study tables, and storage space. Basic amenities are provided  in the form of LCD TV  in common room of each hostel. Sports facilities like Volley ball, table tennis, lawn tennis, cricket, chess board, badminton are available in the hostels.

Financial Assistance:

Students of this Institute, are awarded various types of scholarships from various schemes of Central Govt., State Governments, PSUs, Charitable Trusts/ Organizations. Few of them are listed below. Most of the scholarships application forms are online and few of them are hard copy based. Students are to fill all the necessary details for these scholarships  as per the advertisement. Notifications are done widely for students as and when information are received  from various funding agencies by Dean (Students welfare) section.

Training & Placement:
The T&P(Training and Placement) Cell of NIT Silchar not only acts as a facilitator for training and placement but also works towards overall development of the students. It works under the guidance of the Training and Placement Officer in consultation with FIC. It primarily works as a liaison between industry and Institute. T&P Cell is well equipped with excellent infrastructure to support each and every stage of the placement processes.

_FIRST EVER MOUNTAINEERING EVENT WAS SUCCESSFULLY CONDUCTED BY THE GYMKHANA UNION BODY OF NIT SILCHAR. IT WAS TREK OF 10 DAYS ON THE ZANSKAR FROZEN RIVER IN LADAKH. One student named Anjan Das represented NIT Silchar in the Trek.

 

 

A list of Tournaments and Competitions in which students participated under the Sports Section NIT, Silchar is given below:

 

  1. All India Inter NIT Tournament held at NIT Surathkal in January 2014.
  2. All India Inter NIT Tournament held at NIT Trichy in February 2014.
  3. State Karate Championship held at Guwahati in the month of March 2013.

 

 

  1. National Service Scheme ( NSS):

 

 This is compulsory for every student. As it is known that the primary aim of NSS is Personality Development through social or community services, this year NIT, Silchar, under NSS has organized campaigns like, Green Day, Campus Cleaning, Green March, Clothes donation programme etc. Apart from that Debate and Quiz Competitions were also organized for the students.

 

  1. National Cadet Corp (NCC):

 

_NCC_ is _engaged in grooming the youth of the country into disciplined and patriotic citizens. Every year NIT, Silchar conducts NCC Annual Training Camp (ATC) for its Cadets. Students attend regular parade sessions for participating on Independence Day and Republic Day march-past


Achievement  of the students of NIT Silchar for various Sports/ Tournaments/ Events/ competition, etc and their success.

Assistantships (M.Tech / Ph.D): Students admitted in the M.Tech & Ph. D programme in the institute are awarded Assistantship as per norms of MHRD and Institute. To be eligible for this Assistantship, a student must have cleared GATE/NET/UGC exams & must be a regular non-sponsored student.

Railway concession service is also provided to students of NIT Silchar from Dean (SW) Office.

NIT Silchar encourages its students for sports and other activities as well. Students are involved in NCC/NSS/Gyansagar and various other co-curricular activities. They also have a student union body, known as “Gymkhana Union Body”

Location and Accessibility:
NIT Silchar is located in the SIlchar. Its distance is 8 km and 10 km from the heart of the Silchar city and Silchar railway station, respectively.  Silchar is the headquarters of Cachar district in the state of Assam in India. Silchar is connected to rest of the country by rail, roads and air.

By Flight:
Flight ( Air India, SpiceJet & Jet Airways) runs everyday from Silchar to Kolkata and Guwahati and back. There are daily flighs from Kolkata and from Guwahati. The road distance of NIT Silchar is about 35 km from the Silchar airport.

By Train:
There are weekly trains from Delhi to Silchar (Sampark Kranti Express).  Kanchanjunga Express runs on three (3) days between Silchar and Kolkata. There are daily trains from Silchar to Guwahati. The road distance of NIT Silchar is about 10 km from the Silchar railway station. 

By Bus:
Buses run from state capital Guwahati (ISBT) to Silchar. There are plenty of deluxe (AC and Non-AC with 2X2 and 1X2 seating options and sleeper coach bus) buses runs in the evening from Guwahati (night super). Day super bus is also available from Guwahati. From bus station (may be ISBT, Silchar or from Silchar town) to NIT Silchar campus, fare is Rs. 150.00 to 200.00 in an auto rickshaw.

For stay at Silchar, hotels are available at Silchar town.

Plan early and avoid late moment rush as Silchar is a small town.
