Location
Kalyani is located in the Nadia district of West Bengal, within the Kolkata metropolitan area and is the administrative headquarter of kalyani subdivision. Situated on the banks of Hooghly river, the city is spread over a sprawling area of 29.14 square kilometre (11.25 square mile). Kalyani being a planned town, is characterized by underground sewerage system, paved roads forming rectangular grids, tree lined avenues and community parks.
The infrastructure in Kalyani has been adequately developed to give it a rich ambience for education and industrial growth with its roads, railways, river, power supply, underground sewerage system, solid waste management, fire brigade and police administration. Other than Indian Institute of Information Technology Kalyani, the city boasts to have two universities - Kalyani University and Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya. Institutes of national importance like IISER Kolkata and National Institute of Biomedical Genomics (NIBMG) have also got their campuses in Kalyani. The All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) will soon make its presence in Kalyani. In addition to the above, Kalyani is having three major hospitals and a medical college.
