Tezpur University

Tezpur University was established in January 1994 by an Act of the Parliament (Act No. 45 of 1993) as a unitary type, residential, University. The University is located at Napaam, about 15 km east of Tezpur town on the northern bank of the river Brahmaputra. The town of Tezpur, famous for its ancient history and rich cultural heritage, is linked by road and rail and by limited flight service to the rest of the state and the country. The 262-acre lush green campus of Tezpur University offers an excellent ambience for teaching and research.

School of Engineering

The School of Engineering consists of nine departments - Department of Applied Sciences, 
Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Department of Design, Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Department of Energy, Food Engineering and Technology, and Mechanical Engineering. Six departments offer B. Tech. programme and seven departments offer M. Tech. programme. The mission and vision of engineering are:

NOTE:

1.  Candidates of the B. Tech. in Food Engineering and Technology programme will be required to pay an additional fee of Rs.1200/- per semester on account of consumables.

2.  Application fee of Rs.800/- have to pay by the candidates of General & OBC (NCL) category and Rs.400/- by the candidates of SC, ST & PWD category. 

3.  Difference in fee (if any) may be deposited in cash at the time of admission.

4.  Mess dues @ Rs. 1500 per month on monthly basis has to be deposited by each candidate at the time of hostel allotment.

Rules For Change Branch:
Rule for change of branch is applicable in B. Tech. programme. A student may apply for change of branch through duly forwarded application from present Head of the department after completion of First semester. The CGPA of First semester will be considered for the branch change as per the preference given by the student. Students willing to change the branch must secure at least 70% score (CGPA 7), and should clear all the Courses including B. Tech. Induction Programme. Preference given at the time of initial admission into the B. Tech. programme will not be transferred for branch changing at this stage. The number of branch change case will be considered only when total number of remaining students in a branch is 75% or above of its intake limit.

The Central Library, Tezpur University was established in 1994 along with the establishment of the University. The library holds 65873 volumes of print documents and subscribed 630 titles of current journals (print 128, online 502). The UGC-Infonet Consortia of INFLIBNET Center is providing access facility to 9081 (including 525 on perpetual basis) e-journals and seven databases. Central Library also gets online access of 926 e-journals through DelCon Consortium. The library also holds more than 1800 CDs scattering to different thought contents. Library users can access book database, theses database, journal database, e-journals and other e-resources from any terminal within the University campus.

Tezpur University started using computers from its very inception in 1994 in its academic activities as well as in the administration. A Computer Centre was established in 1997 to facilitate a common computational resource centre for the academic programmes as well as for maintenance of the other computing resources in the university. Over the years the University has grown substantially in terms of departments and academic programmes as well as in infrastructure. The computer centre has implemented a campus LAN with optical fiber backbone connecting the academic as well as administrative departmentsg spread over the the University campus of 241 acres. Internet connectivity is provided throughout the campus with 10Mbps OFC Link (UGC-INFONET), a 2Mbps Leased Line Link and a VSAT link of 512 Kbps. Wireless LAN has also been set-up to extend the LAN connectivity to the Hostels and the residential areas. The computer centre maintains one Central Computer Centre (CC) with about 60 latest configured PCs and one Central Server Room. It also maintains the web server, mail server, proxy server, file server, anti-virus server, administrative database server, library server of the University. Besides these servers, one SGI-Altix 350 High Performance Computer Server system is dedicated for research community for high-end computational work. Centre is also well-equipped with Scanners, Laser Printers, DMP printers and Multimedia projector.

Health Centre of Tezpur University has been functioning since 1995. It provides health care services to students, faculty and staff of Tezpur University. The Health Centre at present operates under the supervision of Tezpur University's own experienced Medical Officers, Dr D K Goswami(CMO), and Dr (Mrs.) Jonali Sarma Goswami(SMO). The medical staff consists of a pharmacist, a laboratory technician and a nurse. The Health Centre offers OPD services but four indoor beds are also available for initial care in emergency cases. A Medical Officer is available round the clock for emergency cases. The facilities available in the Health Centre have been further increased. While the Health Centre has is own ECG machine and autoanalyser, an Ultrasound scanner was recently introduced into service. Specialists in disciplines like Radiology, Paediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology have been engaged to make weekly visits for the benefit of the University community. From 28 March 2008 onwards, the Health Centre conducted its Annual Health Checkup programme for the employees of the University.

The new state-of-the-art Guest House of the University was commissioned in May 2009. Sited on a two-acre green campus, the University Guest House has 45 tastefully furnished rooms, a 30-seater Conference Room, a 40-seater Dining Hall (all airconditioned), lounges, perfectly matching upholsteries and a catering that carefully prepares and serves vegetarian, non-vegetarian and continental cuisines. HOSTELS

University provides hostel facility to all its students. Presently there are five mens’ hostel and eight women's' hostel. Each hostel has mess facility. The mess is run by the students of the respective hostel. Each Hostel is equipped with basic facility such as internet, washing machine, water purifier, TV in common room, canteen etc.


Play ground with Night Playing Facility

University provides night playing facilities. Football, volleyball, Basketball, Tennis grounds are equipped with lighting facility which can be used till 10:00pm. Indoor hall is used for Badminton and Table Tennis. Well equipped swimming pool (50 mtrs), and sophisticated Gymnasium is there for use of all campus dwellers.

Student Life at Institute:
MICROSOFT INNOVATION CENTER (MIC)

Established in the year 2013 at TU, the Centre is a program initiated by Microsoft Inc. to help students and young researchers turn their innovative ideas into reality.

MEMS DESIGN CENTRE

The lab is equipped with 15 high-end computers connected to one dedicated server. MEMS design tools like Intellisuite 8.5 and a class kit license for Comsol 4.0 are available. NPMASS is funded by Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) and is run by Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) in the ECE Department.

Student Branch Chapter TU, which mainly aims at importing research and competitiveness in the field of Electronics and Computer science engineering.

TEZPUR UNIVERSITY ROBOTICS SOCIETY (TURS)

Aims to promote exchange of information about robotics to stimulate education in sciences and to promote the enjoyment of robotics as a hobby.

 SAE India

TU Collegiate Club, a part of the international Society of Automotive Engineers is a student club aimed at promoting automotive and aerospace engineering, robotic s and various other technical aspects of engineering.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP DEVELOPMENT CELL (EDC)

The EDC was started with the object of promoting specialized knowledge in the field of entrepreneurship development. The Cell strives to inspire talented youths to entrepreneurship. It organize various programmes on entrepreneurship development.

STUDENTS' ACTIVITY CENTER

The university has an in-built section to deal with the welfare of the students, presently headed by the Dean of Students Welfare. The section comprises various clubs and centers like the TEDx, Movie Club, Astronomy Club, Philately Club, Adventure Sports and Adda-The Quizzing Club, sports complex, gymnasium and also the well-being of the 6 men's and 6 women's hostels.

SPORTS COMPLEX

The University's Sports Complex has modern facilities (along with night playing facility) for sports like football,volleyball, , basketball, lawn tennis, track. Swimming pool of international standard. Facilities for badminton, table tennis, Kabaddi, cricket and field events and many more.

GYMNASIUM

The students also avail themselves of an excellent mini indoor stadium and also a world class gymnasium equipped with the most modern and state-of-the-art equipment. Students of undergraduate programmes take up either or as a course for 2 compulsory credits in their second year

YOGA CLUB

To promote positive health and energy among the students.

Financial Assistance:

Tezpur University provides financial assistance to some meritorious students of B. Tech programme. Financial assistance is also provided to some students belonging to economically weak families. Further, the university provides necessary documents and support to the students for applying scholarship to various agencies , such as, post metric SC, ST and OBC scholarships of various states, Merit cum Means Minority Scholarships, NEC scholarship etc.

Training & Placement:

OVERVIEW

The placement season begins in the month of August and goes until June of the following year. However, the Training and Placement Cell conducts several activities throughout the year for the benefit of students. Some of the activities are as follows:


Resume verification

All claims made by students in resumes submitted for campus placement are duly verified by the Training and Placement Cell. The verification standards are uniform throughout the Institute.


Employability enhancement programme

The University aims at giving its students the maximum benefit of getting groomed during their studentship. This includes, among others, the need to develop soft skills not only for facing placement interviews, but also to excel in their corporate careers in future. With this goal in mind, the Training and Placement Cell conducts several employability enhancement activities:

 

o    Communication skill evaluation sessions.

o    Mock group discussions and personal interviews.

o    Informal interactive talks with alumni in hostels and departments, every hostel has a common room for its boarders to interact.

o    Aptitude, technical and mental ability tests.

o    Communication skills enhancement programs.

o    Workshops in collaboration with recruiting companies to aid students in resume preparation, case study solving, etc.

o    Credit based technical writing courses are given to students throughout the year.

 

Each B. Tech. programme has been incorporated with a compulsory summer internship programme to give the students a firsthand experience of the professional world. Hence at the end of third year each student undergoes internship in various reputed organizations and institutes. The Training and Placement Cell assists the students to get into different organizations and some of the meritorious students will soon be given opportunity to undergo internship in various international institutes in pursuit of collaborations, most likely in Queen's University, University of Colorado, University of Nottingham, etc.

 

The Training and Placement Cell also organizes Industrial trips for the students so that the students get exposure to work at mega projects.

Industry And Alumni Relations:

In an effort to bring the Industry closer to our students, the University at intervals organizes talks and interactive sessions involving executives from the Industry and students and faculty of the University. This, on one hand, facilitates the industry executives to visit and see the University, and, on the other hand, gives the students an opportunity to interact face-to-face with the executives. The faculty/officers of the University also visit industrial houses on various occasions as a part of the industry-academia bonding exercise.

Recreational/Extra Curricular activities:

Albeit the students follow a tight academic schedule, yet they are given ample opportunity to pursue various extra-curricular activities, ranging from inter hostel sports to national and international level competitions. This also includes the mess and hostel infrastructure facilities being managed by the students, clubs and societies to promote technical, managerial and social well-being of the students.

 TECHXETRA

The annual technical festival of Tezpur University organized by the students of the School of Engineering during the month of October-November for a period of three days is now the new identity of the University itself. It comprises workshops, exhibitions, robotic events, invited lectures, webinars, events, hardcore quizzing, gaming and cultural extravaganza. Technical issues like Green Technology, Sustainable Energy and Water and their use with wherewithal are discussed over the years by a combination of students from around the country and other senior faculties and new age inventors.

 INSCIGNIS

The science fest of Tezpur University organized by the students of the School of Sciences on the occasion of National Science day. Various competitions and events are held over a period of two days that include eminent talks from renowned personalities, Noble Laureates, webinars, quizzes and exhibitions.

 SAMPARK

Sampark is an industry-academia interface organized by the school of Management Sciences, which aims at establishing a synergic relationship between the academic and industrial worlds and serves as a platform where the budding managers can interact face-to-face with the real world management of the corporate houses.

 UNIFEST

The university participates in the inter-university competitions, and has won many prizes in cultural and literary events, and quizzes.

 ANNUAL MEET

Held every year in January, the Annual Meet comprises Inter-hostel sports, quiz and various other cultural and literary events.

Location and Accessibility:
Tezpur town is located in geographically central part of Assam. Major tourist attrcations of Assam like Kaziranga National Park, Nameri National Park, Sonai-Rupai Wildlife Sanctuary are located at a distance of 2 hours by road from Tezpur. It is 3h 30m away by road from Guwahati.

Important Junctions near Tezpur Town to Reach Tezpur University

Mission Chariali -- Preferable if arrived by train to Dekargaon or by road via Mangaldoi

Dolabari -- Preferable if arrived  by road via Nagaon

Parowa Chariali -- 2 and 3 KM away from previous two Junctions, nearest to Tezpur Town.

ROAD ROUTES

Guwahati to Tezpur

National Highway No. 31 via Jalukbari upto Baihata Chariali and NH 52 from Baihata Chariali via Mangaldoi. Distance : 181 kms

National Highway No. 37 via Nagaon upto Kaliabor Tiniali and NH 37A from Kaliabor Tiniali via Kolia Bhomora bridge. Distance : 198 kms.

·         Tezpur Town - Darrang College -Paruwa Chariali - Paruwa Bagan-Amolapam-University Campus (shortest route)

·         Tezpur Town - Darrang College -Paruwa Chariali - Dolabari - Paachmile -University Campus

·         National Highway No. 52 - Mission Chariali -Paruwa Chariali-Paruwa Bagan-Amolapam-University Campus

·         National Highway No. 52 -  Solmara Army Base Camp - Amolapam - University Campus

Regular Bus service are available from Guwahati (ISBT/Machkhowa) to Tezpur ASTC Bus Station via Nagaon or Mangaldoi. To reach Tezpur University, University Bus Services are available from Tezpur ASTC Bus Station via Paruwa/ Dolabari to University Campus in scheduled time (Detail Bus Schedule Time is available at TU web page). Besides University Bus Service, Taxis are available from Tezpur Town (Near ASTC Bus Station) or Mission Chariali and Private Bus from Tezpur Town (Near Idgah Maidan) to reach University


AIR CONNECTIVITY

Direct Air India Flights are available from Kolkata to Tezpur are available THRICE-A-WEEK on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Many other daily flights are available from/to Guwahati to/from other big cities of the country.


RAIL CONNECTIVITY 

Tezpur is connected by Broad Gauge line from Dekargaon Rail Station to Rangia Junction via Rangapara Junction. Nearest main rail hub is Guwahati which is well connected by different Trains from other important places.
